Lego advent calendars - I know they are overpriced but I've bought them anyway

And I'm ridiculously pleased with myself. Ive resisted for the last two or three years even though I know ds would love one because they seem frivolous, too expensive for what they are etc etc. And then today I decided that he won't want one in two years time, he'll be 10 and it'll all be computer games and other technology. So he has the Lego Star Wars one and dd has the Lego friends one and they will be delighted :)

I asked DS1, today, if he still wanted one for his 11th birthday (On December 1st, so it's a birthday tradition of ours). He did, of course. Thankfully, the Lego City ones are all of £15 at Amazon, at the moment.

I'm a bit disappointed they didn't bring out a Lego Movie one, tbh.

heymammy · 11/10/2014 19:12

Me too ouryve, I would def have forked out for a new one if it was the Lego Movie, instead we just reuse the old one!

ZingOfSeven · 11/10/2014 19:34

I want a Lego advent calendar!!!Envy where did you get it?

JKSLtd · 11/10/2014 20:04

Magso & others thanks.
I was thinking of the Star Wars but actually if I'm just getting 1 and reusing the bits in a wooden calendar then Star Wars isn't very Christmassy so the 'straight forward' one makes more sense.

ouryve · 11/10/2014 20:06

Ours end up mixed into the big lego box at the end of December. Santa ends up in all sorts of costumes, though the year!

AlpacaPicnic · 11/10/2014 23:37

I got the Star Wars one for DH this year... He's going to be 39 on Dec 3rd so it's actually his birthday present too... Along with a comedy Star Wars festive jumper. At least he'll get a months wear out of it!

SmileAndNod · 12/10/2014 06:36

We've bought these for the first time this year (well the DCs did with their birthday money). They are quite expensive I suppose but then Lego is, and I think in the star wars one you get quite a few mini figures. Lego gets played with a lot here so it's not like it's going to be thrown away at the end of December.

Thanks for the tIp about opening the calendar after school Smile

currieaddict · 12/10/2014 07:57

DS had one last year but we got a free playmobil one so it will be they one this year.

chanie44 · 12/10/2014 08:29

I've been collecting the free Lego from the newspapers since ds was born. Next Xmas, he should be the right age for the sets, so I may turn them into an advent calandar.

jamtoast12 · 12/10/2014 10:05

Do be careful to check the item code. Every shop I've been in is still selling last years version. I'm not sure if the new version is out for this year yet.

magso · 12/10/2014 11:19

Lego shops certainly have the new sets (ds was bought a week ago). There are 9 mini figures in the star wars calendar. Some windows only have accessories.
Brilliant idea to use the mini sets given out in newspapers.

MILLYmo0se · 12/10/2014 11:30

I love these, we put the Xmas bits (like Santa) away with Xmas decorations and DD is thrilled to have them to play with the next Xmas, and she plays with the other bits all through the year. Btw schleich and Playmobil also do advent calenders, all on Amazon .

profpoopsnagle · 12/10/2014 14:00

We have reused the lego one for about 4 years, only now is the box starting to look a little tattered but still fine for this year. I get one of the DC to sort and put the pieces back after Christmas, one of their favourite jobs. I have also got a 'new' playmobil one this year too which I think they will like.

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 14:09

Ds lives, sleeps and breathes Lego, he won't believe his luck

I love it when you can find something that gets that kind of a reaction :) Well worth it!! (when you can afford it)

ZingOfSeven · 12/10/2014 15:44

I don't think breathing Lego is safe. stop him!

Our local independant toy shop has last years at £14.99, I'm sure other shops and chains would do them cheaper

JerseySpud · 12/10/2014 21:47

I actually think they are good value. You have the excitement over opening it and the toys to play with after Christmas.

DD1 has got lego city
DD2 is getting play mobil
DH is getting lego star wars

and im having a yankee candle one

ZingOfSeven · 12/10/2014 22:10

jersey

where are you buying the candle one? I love Yankee's!

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 12/10/2014 22:18

Got DC Playmobil ones cheap last January in Asda as the RRP made me wince! But actually it's packed with cute woodland critters (little baby raccoons fgs!)

This year I am reusing them and filling each window with extra treats like chocolates, Christmas stampers, cheap tat from Amazon...I'm really only doing it for the kids and not at all enjoying it! Wink Grin

IneedAwittierNickname · 12/10/2014 22:23

I bought a cheap fill your own advent calendar in ikea and a cheap (compared to the the lego advent calendar) lego set and made my own. I've only done it once though and only because Ds2 had a playmobil one that came free when my dad bought his birthday present so I felt I had to get ds1 something similar.

Rudgey84 · 23/10/2014 21:44

I've been looking for a Lego calendar for a while, there was a good one out last year but my DS was too young and was not worth the expense. This year I was determined to get one before the prices shoot up. They are not cheap by all means. I recommend looking around supermarkets as they usually have the best lego deals especially Tesco. I eventually bought from here - not the cheapest but at least it showed me all the different types.

Norfolkandchance1234 · 04/11/2014 15:41

They do cost a lot I guess, but I've been getting Lego or play mobile advent sets now the last few years and they love them, I love them, so who am I to deny them. And yes they will play with the Lego for the rest of year in their collection. In fact this year we have Lego Star Wars for DS and Lego friends for DD. They had some great play mobile ones to but this years new Lego Star Wars looked pretty cool and it was the last set. Bought mine at toys r us who sometimes do 3 for 2 sets but I wasn't patient enough to wait.

Wilf83 · 04/11/2014 15:46

I have just got the Lego city one...for my dh! Grin

kelda · 04/11/2014 15:50

We celebrate Saint Nicholas on the 5/6 december. My dc will all be getting the Lego/playmobil calenders as Saint Nicholas present to count down to Christmas. DD1 the new modern villa advent calender, containing a light op tree here;
dd2 the Lego Friends calender
ds the Star Wars calender.

I can't wait.

Norfolkandchance1234 · 04/11/2014 15:50

Considering they get an exclusive piece everyday for 24 days, and a kind of backdrop to display them on for the month, it's not bad going. It's a bit of a tradition now for us and makes the run up to Christmas more exciting and also means they don't expect quite as much on the day. So I tell myself, as they've been getting all these little bits for a whole month.
