7 Year Old, who is NOT getting an X-Box...

And I have no idea what to steer him towards instead!

He is my youngest, is crazy about maths, science, chess, computers and gaming. I try to balance this with sport, outside stuff etc, and he has limited screen time which he tends to spend on Minecraft on the PC.

He has access to my laptop, the boys share a Wii (which doesn't get much use) and share a tablet which they saved up for.

All he wants is an X-box, and has been talking about this for a year. I have pointed out that he doesn't use the Wii much, and that he prefers the laptop anyway.

DH says no way, too much money, only wants it because his friends have one etc, and I agree, but I have no idea what else he might enjoy.

Anyone ideas!?!

If he's into gaming and maths etc how about a raspberry pi? It's educational etc too and not expensive!! Smile

Almost 8yo DS want an Xbox, he's not getting one though. He's also asked for his own Nintendo DS (they currently share one) so I'll probably get him a second hand one from GAME. Maybe the 3D one.

I'm thinking about getting a Pi for them to share at xmas. Not sure yet. We don't have a suitable console for Minecraft so I do feel we're all missing out a bit there.

X box's are cheap, are still supported and games are still being released on them. No way you need an xbox one.

It's not just a games console you can use it for other things like Netflix and iplayer etc. I use mine to watch films downloaded to YouTube.

Wiis are not even in the same vein and I can't understand the thinking of getting something else instead of the one thing they want the most.

If you don't want him to have one then just say no.. steering him to something else instead doesn't make any sense.

My DS has Xbox 360 kinnect.

It's great and we can still buy games for it. He is allowed FIFA for 30 minutes each day and we both play on the Sports games - which are good exercise. We also play Rio and Kinnect adventures. Minecraft is a bit crap on Xbox to be fair - the IPad version is better.

Apart from FIFA, which I hate, his other games are family stuff that we do together. I'm a dab hand at table tennis and boxing.

DS (7) will be getting an Xbox 360 to play mine craft on. No way would I be shelling out for an Xbox one. I'm waiting for black Friday hoping to get a good bundle deal.

My 6 yo DS (who will be 7 by Christmas) will be getting an Xbox 360 this year. He absolutely loves Minecraft and plays the pocket version on his tablet. He also watches Stampy and his mate Ballistic Squid and off the back of that would like to play Sims too. Tesco were doing the 250gb version for £149 recently - that was the cheapest I had seen that model online. The 4gb one is only £25 less and seems pointless to get that one if you'd end up spending more for a bigger hard drive further down the line. Unfortunately the 250gb model seems to be unavailable on Tesco website at the moment but I'm hoping it will be back later in the year when they do their CC boost and use that towards the cost. Last year we did that and got £60 off his hudl tablet (which has been fab!)

My ds loves the Xbox (we had one for years which nobody used, the dds weren't interested) and he went on it when he was quite young.
We also have a Wii which he doesn't really play, they're not really the same so I wouldn't assume if he doesn't go on the wii he won't go on the Xbox.
We buy games from cex for around a fiver.
At 7 most of boys play Xbox or PlayStation and I think they can feel left out of they don't. I agree you could get a second hand one and see how he gets on with it.

Ive just bought my 9 yr old a new xbox 360 250gb from currys, it will be for xmas and bday as thats two wks after xmas! It was 149.99 collect in store only. I have bought terraria as well as its newish and similar to minecraft, he has that on his kindle.

Isitrainingoutside · 05/10/2014 10:55

We were in Game yesterday discussing getting an xbox for our 7yo. The bloke there said get the 360 over the xbox one for 2 reasons. 1) there are loads more suitable games available for the xbox 360. Most of the xbox one games at the moment are adult orientated. 2) most of his friends will have the 360 so they can join online - that's what I think he said! We were worried about the 360 being obsolete but going to take the advice and get the 360. Good luck

Thanks again.

We've been away with friends this weekend, and they also bought their 360 second hand at Game. Their son plays X box live with school friends, and has been telling ds2 all about it.

I think I'm going to go for it, and then buy Terraria (??? No idea but he's also very keen on thisHmm) for his birthday in January.

Just got to convince DH.
