I work in retail. The last 2 years have involved mad dashes round town after working all day with some horrible people taking out their Christmas woes on you and spending 73 billion hours waiting in queues and trying to avoid the crowds!

So I want to be organised by the first, nothing left to buy and only wrapping and decorating to worry about.

Anyone else up for the challenge?

I have so many to buy for that I start in January, if I see something that I know 1 of them would like. I usually do a reasonable amount of pondering, and purchasing, in the summer sales (lovely handbag for DSis 1 year, and DSil another year, for a song!). I like to make some presents too when I have time, so they need to get started early (I started knitting a blanket for DH's aunt about 4 years ago - I just never get a chance to sit with it anymore to finish it, it's only about halfway done lengthwise, but very easy knitting when watching tv, how I long to just watch tv at night again!!).

Things that are ok to pick up now are stocking fillers if I see quirky things or get bargains in socks, underwear etc or nice stationary in back to school sales; PJs for DH, DD and I; start putting together non-perishables (both for our house and for the Lions Club collection - I aim to give them essentially a week's shopping for a family so will get doubles on stuff like coffee with extra free, or get a 3for2 and put the spare into that box etc all autumn). And try to find a couple of bottles of naice wine for DH and I to enjoy on Christmas Day (he'd buy decent wine, €10-12 "big brand" bottle rather than €4.99 Lidl everyday drinking (we have a few specific ones we get which are actually very drinkable at that price), but I like to see if I can find a really nice one as a treat - we'll only drink 1 bottle anyway, so I think it's worth it. And I like to try to find a half bottle of desert wine for pudding, which I will probably drink mostly, but I don't drink it the rest of the year).

And I tend to keep an eye out in general for things that I know would suit particular people. So something to do with sailing or outdoors for 1 uncle, I got a lovely metal bookmark at a market in Brussels last month (instead of the book token he's got for the past 10 years) for DH's uncle, 1 aunt loves music, another is really into gardening (and autumn clearances in garden centres can be surprisingly good hunting grounds - not just for gardening things!), 2 guys are mad about Monty Python and Mr Bean, 2 couples are either just finished organizing their own home or about to embark on it - so any good deals on homewares are good for them too. There's a couple of babies that small clothes are always welcome, and the somewhat bigger children are generally reasonably non-fussy about what they want from us (1 loves Hello Kitty, another loves a particular sport, an older one loves playing piano and HSM so I'm getting her sheet music of that this year - but something age-appropriate either clothes or toys-wise can be bought whenever I see a good option.

While I am not yet embarking on DD's main presents (Christmas, and Birthday on 26th December) or her clothes (which she will help choose), or DH's as he has everything and is sooo hard to get ideas for (and hasn't yet thought about it, apparently), I am making decent progress on the rest.

Benguinsmummy · 21/08/2014 12:35

I'll join ya... Every year it's the same last minute mess...

MyMummyRuns · 21/08/2014 13:13

Joining! I'm usually pretty organised planning and buying stuff but then get complacent and normally spend Christmas Eve in a manic wrapping frenzy surrounded by a sea of sellotape.

So this year I will get everything bought AND wrapped by 30th November and all cards written and posted by 7th December. Tat will be confined to stocking presents only - £15 limit per stocking and no twitching!

(That twitching thread was hilarious BTW - wonder if snowman ever found a home for all those garlic crushers Grin)

BiddyPop · 21/08/2014 15:03

I thought I'd check, when trying to track a parcel, if the Christmas posting dates were announced yet. They weren't, but An Post increased the cost of posting letters and parcels last month and I never heard about it (we were on hols at the time).

So I'll need to add another few quid to that budget line (I send around 75 cards by post between national and international, and I have to post at least 3 parcels this year).

enormouse · 21/08/2014 15:36

Joining in too. Last year was wonderful and I managed to get everything sorted by mid November. It was so lovely to be able to enjoy the build up.

I've planned out what I want to get and am going to start ordering 1 present a week.

I will not get the twitch this year. I refuse to.

misstiredbuthappy · 21/08/2014 19:04

Seems lots of people are starting early this year then.

meglet · 21/08/2014 19:38

I've bought 6 stocking fillers this week. There's some reduced England merchandise that 7yo DS will appreciate.

I remembered that as well as a new scooter each I was going to buy a Raspberry Pi for them to share, I've already bought a coding book for kids. So I do need to check what bits of kit I need for that (ie; ask on geeky stuff).

Blithereens · 21/08/2014 20:21

Ooh I'd like to join! DH actually has some time off this Christmas, for once, and I would like to spend it relaxing with him, instead of rushing madly around.

I've got my spreadsheet (we use one every year so I can see what I bought people in the past few years!) and have ordered a necklace for my niece and a wine stopper topped with a golf ball for my golf (and wine) mad aunt.

Also got some animal transfers that go on your hand so you can 'talk' with them for my friend's little boy. Only a fiver, here if you're interested www.notonthehighstreet.com/the3bearsonestopgiftshop/product/animal-monster-hand-temporary-tattoo-s

Ladyofthehouse · 21/08/2014 20:28

Ooh I'll join! Really need to spread the cost!

Had a great idea this week for kids presents especially that need to be posted.....bought plain white t shirts, fabric pens and stencil sets off amazon. Worked out at about 8 pounds each and that's 6 presents crossed off!

It's a start!

admiralclingus · 21/08/2014 20:35

I realised today that I will have the entire Christmas week off this year so will be able to do some actual drinking of gin family things for a change instead of missing out on everything like I have for the last 2 years.

Have ordered today

A watch for my uncle
Glass baubles for my friends 2 girls for keepsakes
2x elf on the shelf dolls
Some blank keyrings for gps /uncle etc to have photo is of dd in
Some books from the book people which will do dd, friends dd and keep some for birthday in Feb (not a massive twitch at all)
A bathbomb set each for 2 friends

I also picked up a Cinderella dress for dd in asda, but seems like a 3-4 will be too small for tiny dd by Christmas so will have to return it :/

This now means that 3 people are completely done yipee!!

That's it for this month now, honestly Wink

Where did you find the elf on the shelf dolls ? If you dont mind me asking. The only ones ive found are expensive.

admiralclingus · 21/08/2014 21:41

On aliexpress, courtesy of someone over on the bargainsthread,! Had great reviews on the ones I bought too!

If you just type " elf shelf" into aliexpress it comes up with quite a few... I paid £7 odd for the two

xalyssx · 21/08/2014 22:57

I've just had a long look at my calendar, and I need to have done Christmas shopping by October 20th! I'm going on holiday near the end of October, then it's Halloween and I'm having a massive party. November is National Novel Writing Month, and then it's December, playtime for my and the kids Smile luckily I'm more than halfway done!

306235388 · 21/08/2014 23:42

meglet have you seen this?

buddles · 21/08/2014 23:56

Last year I had all pressies bought and wrapped, and all decorations and tree up by the night of nov 30th Grin hoping to do the same this year. I have 4 pressies bought so far.

admiralclingus · 22/08/2014 08:32

I'm excited to start receiving all my parcels!

I was really pleased when I told my mom on Skype about all my good buys.... Then she ruined my Christmas high by telling me my sister starts in Jan and is usually done by sept Shock

5 bags decluttered and gone from house (clothes aback and charity shop) this morning, along with another 2 bags to green bin last night and a pole of paperwork for burning (shredder is bust).

This morning, I got to ikea by 10.30 and left at 11.05, a record! I got a load of storage boxes I wanted, some paint they didn't have for BIL last week, printer paper (new school year!), and finally found a lasagne dish for 2 person servings.

Then I went to a retail park en route home, and got the trousers hangers I need (each holds 4 pairs) for the "off season" wardrobe, and 3 birthday presents for tonight.

I am now just finished a lemon tart and latte in peace, and about to go home and tackle the rest of that off season wardrobe, and the study.

Not exactly Christmassy in itself, but it is part of my seasonal house cleaning plan, I am just starting a week early this year.

aubreye · 25/08/2014 10:08

BiddyPop Did a Charity Shop and eBay job lot last weekend. Cupboards are feeling rather empty but DD1 has been circling clothes magazines for Christmas items all week since she said goodbye to many clothes that were too tiny since her growth spurt. Only have a few board games left, about four and hoping to buy some new, nicer ones later in the year. Sorted out the dressing up box and old baby toys, we have so much more room in the loft and the kids playroom attic room.

Bought all DCs main presents apart from DD2s as she wants the 2015 girl of the year instead of 2014 which is fair enough so I'll have to pre order it. Also waiting until closer to christmas before buying DSs TopShop T-Shirt as I want to buy some newer stock for him.

New cubs uniform for DS1 and DS2 is dying to join beavers but has to wait until he is six in May 2016! DD1 has just started Brownies so new uniform for her. This is guiding out of the way so now I can focus on more christmas stuff.

Bought new cooking stuff from Lakeland. DS1 smashed my old tagine as he thought it was giant cup so bought a new one. Bought fun cake moulds for DC and Doctor Who chocolate moulds!!!

That's me done for this month, next month it's DSs birthday and more serious planning!

IsabellaofFrance · 25/08/2014 10:18

Have got 4 stocking presents this morning so I have started. Also will pre-order the latest New Tricks DVD for my Dad.

I also have a list. I love lists :D

WalkingWolf · 25/08/2014 10:57

I'm in! DDs birthday in a few days so I'll be starting after that. I love Christmas. I'm so excited already! GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin
