I work in retail. The last 2 years have involved mad dashes round town after working all day with some horrible people taking out their Christmas woes on you and spending 73 billion hours waiting in queues and trying to avoid the crowds!

So I want to be organised by the first, nothing left to buy and only wrapping and decorating to worry about.

Anyone else up for the challenge?

I'll join.

So far me and the dc's (8 & 6 by dec) have already decided that they'll get 2 wheeler scooters for xmas. Their mini and maxi micros are a bit too young for them now. So I just need to find out which brand is the best and order them.

Already started stocking fillers. I tidied the xmas box away neatly in Jan and listed what's in there and what I don't need any more of (wrap and cards).

Rowboat · 19/08/2014 14:14

The twitch terrifies me. Smile
70 yes I keep having to remind myself it's still august as it definitely feels "back endish" as my dm says. I hope it is snowy as we didn't get any.last year which was a relief last year as had ds just before xmas. It would also nice to be snowed in and not have to go to IL's!Smile

BiddyPop · 19/08/2014 14:32

Oh, I wonder if OhYouBadBadKitten has any winter/Christmas weather predictions yet for UK/Ireland? Even just general overview of mild or severe weather expected would be useful.....

I think I'll wander over to the weather board and ask the question (but don my flameproof coat first, for asking outside the Christmas boards!!).

JohnnyDeppsfuturewife · 19/08/2014 17:41

I made a good start. I bought Xmas presents for three nieces and cousins. Two of them live abroad so I always have to buy early so that visiting relatives / inlaws can drop them off. Hoping I have Xmas wrapping paper left over from last year. I hate the way shops don't start selling wrapping paper until really late (like September?).

misstiredbuthappy · 19/08/2014 21:07

Bloody hell biddy your brave.

MumofWombat · 20/08/2014 08:21

I've written overseas Christmas cards. It might seem early - but I want to send by boat so it's cheap.

BiddyPop · 20/08/2014 11:03

MissTired, possibly brave, but I seem to be getting ignored rather than flamed. TG!!

I need to go back onto both IWantOneOfThose and NotOn TheHighStreet this morning to find the perfect tshirt I saw for my DBro's 30th early next month. And maybe throw in a few stocking fillers for adults to make good value of the postage.

I don't wrap until December, as the tape always comes undone on me. But I intend wrapping in the first week rather than last minute. I usually have to post a few things and drop bags either to relatives near to us here (if we're travelling) or to relatives where we grew up (if we stay here) in advance. Locals would only be Christmas week, but "down home" is usually a trip down either late Nov or early Dec for a weekend - in between DH's overseas travel, DD's schedule of matches, training and parties, and any events we actually want to do as a family. I might keep ILs until PILs visit on Boxing Day this year, they'll bring down to BIL and SIL and their families. But I won't see my family (or at least, those "down home") until the week after Christmas when they come up for Dad's family dinner (he has 5 siblings, so dinner including spouses, whichever of my generation are around (2 families, 9 "kids" - ranging from 40 down to 5 this year) and DD is the only next generation usually there (of 3 - the other 2 live abroad), is around 20-24 people!!).

I have my Christmas jumper sorted - I bought a Christmas pudding one in Next last year. DD has a sequinned reindeer top from M&S that will still fit, her printed penguins skiing scene sweatshirt will probably still fit (just!), and I think she has another Christmas top as well in the drawer. But she'll probably want to get a new outfit for Christmas Day that I'll have to suffer the shops for. Tracksuits and runners all year round, but for Christmas, she usually looks for something like a skirt, nice top and cardigan, and proper button up woolen coat!! Strange child - but for any other "event" (birthday parties, nice days out, seeing grandparents...) she wants to wear trackies and sportsgear and its a real battle to even get into jeans and a plain top.

I don't know if I need a new outfit or not this year - I will see how the weightloss plan goes, but I have a few nice things in the wardrobe anyway.

Must keep an eye out for nice wines soon, a nice bottle of bubbles, one for dinner and a half bottle for pudding, and put those away. I still have a half a bag of amaretti biscuits from last year (my personal treat - DH and DD not fans of almonds). I already have the naice hot choc (the block of real choc in a block with a wooden spoon stuck into it to help stir it into hot milk) for Christmas Eve - I got one with a squirt of amaretto liqueur last year which was interesting, but I experimented over Christmas with some others from the drinks cabinet - brandy was lovely, and chocolate liqueur (from Geneva about 8 years ago), and honey rum from Gran Canaria (12 years ago!), sloe gin and crème de framboise were both spoiled by it though.

I am in the throes of clearing out some of the clutter at home. The bins tomorrow are stuffed, and I have a few bags for the charity shop and clothes bank to drop on Friday. And another 2 rooms to get sorted then too. But its all helping.

JerseySpud · 20/08/2014 11:54

The weather board is really quiet, i hang out there too

OYBBK will be along soon

Ratbagcatbag · 20/08/2014 12:16

I ordered my Christmas planner - DH was Hmm oh well Grin

Actually excited lots now. Will crack on with it all when I get back.

We're away Oct half term which is when I usually do a lot as well, so need to consider when I'm going to actually get it all done.

BiddyPop · 20/08/2014 14:33

Notonthehighstreet were out of stock on the tshirt until later this week.

Unfortunately, IWOOT had some lovely things that distracted me - so I spent €94 on stocking fillers for DH and DD, a birthday present for one DSis, and a cool gadget as a present to me (I am considering making up a stocking for both DH and I this year - I'll have to fill both! But DD will probably want to help too.).

BiddyPop · 20/08/2014 14:34

(The end of that post was meant to read...)

The twitch has struck

ItHasANiceRingWhenYouLaugh · 20/08/2014 17:40

Joining as I loved being done early last year.

misstiredbuthappy · 20/08/2014 19:12

Im going to get into full christmas shopping mode once dd goes back to school.

Ive had a few packages from amazon arrive and shes been very eager to seewhat they are. Ive told her there for our next door neighbour :)

ItHasANiceRingWhenYouLaugh · 20/08/2014 19:29

Can someone tell me about the twitch? I've read about it in passing but...

admiralclingus · 20/08/2014 20:54

Oh jeeze I twitched today.... Have already got fils presents, but saw something on the bargain thread and thought "maybe...."

I've resisted.... For now!

OP posts:
JohnnyDeppsfuturewife · 20/08/2014 22:29

Well resisted admiral. Can I ask what you've got your fil? I find men so much harder to buy for than women and am always on the lookout for good ideas. There are only so many shirts, bottles of wine and garden tools I can buy my fil.

aubreye · 20/08/2014 23:21

Sounds good, I'm in. I've already decided on main presents so need to order then soon;

DS1- HEAD Tennis Racket and TopShop T-Shirt of some sort.
DD1- Sylvanian Families Maple Manor and Conservatory, Completely Revolting Recipes.
DS2- Tiger Trunki, Nerf super soaker, Walkie Talkies
DD2- American Girl (Girl of the year- Isabelle) With book and an outfit

Deciding on buying them AFTER DS1's birthday so in October, I'll be ahead of everyone else so hopefully they won't have sold out!

admiralclingus · 21/08/2014 00:19

johnny I bought him a make your own Apache kit because he likes flying things ( annoyed I bought it on a whim from a market cuz I paid £10!!!) and a biome

OP posts:
JohnnyDeppsfuturewife · 21/08/2014 08:58

Thanks admiral, they're good ideas. Not sure if fil likes making things (other than DIY projects in his house) but we bought him a biome for his birthday. Good job I have 17 weeks to think some more.

jamtoast12 · 21/08/2014 09:09

Out of interest, if you buy so early do you not worry people will want to exchange or refund? In our family receipts go in with the present, particularly for adults? When buying for the kids, don't they change their mind? Mine are into new things every few months plus all the new toys for 2014 haven't been released yet? Come sept, they'll be on the tv non stop!

Don't get me wrong, I'm christmas obsessed and also start in September but before then I usually stick to lists and stocking up the cupboard with a couple of extra items per week.

aubreye · 21/08/2014 09:22

The things on my list are things they've always been into. For example, I'm not sure DS will suddenly stop training at the Tennis club four times a week in a few months.

admiralclingus · 21/08/2014 09:32

My fil is the easy one to buy for, its the mil I struggle with every year and her birthday is the week before which means 2 lots of awkward presents to buy. I don't even know what I bought her last year!

OP posts:
lecherrs · 21/08/2014 09:34

Jamtoast,

Early on I tend to either buy absolute bargains or things that I buy every year. So for example, each year my DDs get a new supply if PJs, vests, pants etc. These can be bought at any time. They also get luxury cereal, bubble gum etc stocking fillers like that.

They have huge sacks for Christmas. 75% of it tends to be practical stuff so I buy that early and leave the toy gifts / other people's main gifts until closer to Xmas. The exception to other people would be if people collect things. So for example, my dad collects pin badges, so if I see something I'd get it whenever and put it away.

tipp2chicago · 21/08/2014 09:58

Great thread - I really want to get sorted by the end of October, which is about the only month in which we will be a little bit flush. I'm thinking about getting the Duktig Kitchen for DD as she will be 2y6m at Christmas - anyone have any opinions/experience of it? PILs both have a birthday within a week of Christmas so I'm off to stalk the bargain thread now for Clarins bargains for MIL. FIL... God only knows. At least my own crowd are easy - books/makeup for my siblings, clothes for my Mam, something for my Granny and that's about it. No idea what to get BIL and his partner.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/08/2014 09:59

jamtoast
I buy household items (especially crockery , glasses, ) in HomeSense when I see them
Portmerion/Spode in TKMaxx on offer

YY , the DC change their minds all the flipping time and my DS has a December birthday.
We book a Young Driver lesson for the DC (I think they do them up till November as it takes up an entire car park)

Jewellery for DD - I can buy when I see .

I start in October with the Stocking gifts, shopping in Oct/Nov is nice.
In December, not so much Grin

(And DS likes Game Vouchers and cash. No need for a receipt for him Wink )
