Ideas for an aspiring fashion designer aged 9.

Thinking ahead and would like to get some things early.

DD loves designing and writing comics and and wants to be a fashion designer. DD also has SEN and don't think she would be able to cope with a sewing machine yet unless very easy to use but open to any ideas.

Any ideas of things I could buy?

Last year I bought dd a cheaper version of designer wheel as it was a small gift, but they do the larger boxes on Amazon. She has had hours of fun with it.
Try TKMaxx for the smaller sets.
I think the larger one may be called fashion wheel or designer wheel, not sure.
They were mentioned on last xmas threads so maybe somebody can remember.

What about the harumika things? (may not have spelt that properly)

It's like little mannequins and you get fabric, glue etc which you drape and stick to make fashions for them.

The fashion angels range is good as well, lots of drawing pads, stencils etc.

Just bought fashion angels portfolio, harumika starter set, harumika accessories pack and fashion wheel with amazon. They all seem to be a good price ATM.

Any more ideas welcome.

good drawing pad and some caran d'ache pencils?

I will have a look at them, do you dip the crayons in water and then use them? Or add water on top of the picture?

A sewing machine? Along with a sewing bee type instruction book, some fabric and threads? Might go down this route with my 11 year old.

I wanted to be a fashion designer at this age (wasn't a phase, I do have a degree in fashion, work in beauty and at fashion week)

I'd get her one of those pretty fabric pin boards and some fashion mags, but the really good ones like Elle Collections and Marie Claire catwalk. Then she can start pinning up things she loves for inspiration when she draws.

Paperchase have lovely sketchbooks and the two magazines I mention have just come out and won't be on the shelves for long, they are only out twice a year and feature catwalk shots of all the main fashion designers so she may find a designer she likes to look up to.

I absolutely love your idea, I'm sure that would be perfect for DD. She does seem to have a talent for colours and the way she's sees clothing/fashion, her favourite past time ATM is making fashion magazines. What's brilliant is she doesn't seem to care what others think of her style, her friends are in to H and M, next, new look clothing and she loves Oilily and Jottum.

You're post has made me feel a bit emotional (in a good way) and made me feel very positive regarding DDs future.

Well when she's older just tell her to big the hell out of every designer she likes and he as much work experience as possible - mine was a month at both Vogue and Alexander McQueen and were invaluable. And get her in as young as you can, I started assisting photographers and being a dresser at fashion shows at 16.

As it is I'm actually having to give up my job to look after my 6 month old and switching to running a coffee van - travel, low pay, late nights and a high stress job don't work with a baby! Hoping to go back freelance later on

I think it's crayola just announced a new 'toy' at the last toy fair which is basically templates of clothes with pencils, the child colours in the clothes with her design then scans it in with the free app then within about 5 seconds you can see a 3d model wearing your designs and walking down the catwalk. Not 100% sure it's crayola but it's definitely a big company like that.
