I used to love the sales, but since getting a mortgage and having children, I don't have the time or money.

My tips are
Go early as popular sizes go quickly and as the previous poster says, the shops get messy.

Have a plan of what you want to buy or shops you want to go to and target those. It's more bearable if you have a plan as opposed to aimlessly wondering around.

Check out items online so you can get an idea of what is is the sale. Better still. Buy it online.

Don't get sucked into buying something because it is cheap - some stock is on sale because people didn't buy it full price or items that have been bought in specifically to be reduced.

Check the returns policy before you buy. Most shops do let you return sale items, but I have been stung a few times in the past.

Keep your receipts in a safe place in case you need to return anything.

Buy your cards & wrapping paper in the sales for next Christmas.

Buy an investment piece from a high end shop in the sales like a good quality coat or real leather handbag.

Buy gift sets from Boots etc for birthdays etc to stash in the present drawer.
