We have PIL, BIL and SIL coming over on Christmas Eve and staying for Christmas day. We need to serve dinner. Thinking about spaghetti bolognese with lots of salad or lasagne with lots of salad.

Or should I change my mind?

I want something easy.

What are you going to serve to your family/guests on Christmas Eve?

Steak pie from the butchers. Was going to be party bits but I was outvoted by DH and DS.

CommanderShepard · 21/12/2013 19:59

Sounds perfect to me! We're doing much the same. Or sausages and mash.

We always have the same on Christmas Eve - big green salad with gravadlax with prawn cocktail and granary bread & butter. Lovely and light ready for the onslaught of the big meal the next day!

Upcycled · 21/12/2013 20:05

aaargh, I don't like pies!
Didn't know it was a tradition.
Do you do individual pies each? Sorry I got no clue about pies.

A huge plate of bacon sandwiches and some hot chocolate.

Upcycled · 21/12/2013 20:08

Huuum, I like blondie idea.

Big salad, gravadlax, will skip prawn cocktail and granary bread and butter.

Maybe I can add some party food too.

But what should I serve between breakfast (toast/cheeese + ham/salami) and dinner?
Only nibbles??

Bacon sandwiches sound like breakfast to me not dinner, sorry.

Fried octopus and roasted salted cod with potatoes and chestnuts.

I'm foreign obviously! Grin

crikeybadger · 21/12/2013 20:11

Always a curry for us. Smile

FourAndDone · 21/12/2013 20:14

Indian takeaway!Grin

OatcakeCravings · 21/12/2013 20:15

No one big, massive pie! With mash, carrots and neeps. It's traditional in Scotland well in my bit anyway.

VworpVworp · 21/12/2013 20:15

Pork is european tradition (north and east) fish is catholic tradition.

Upcycled · 21/12/2013 20:18

Where do I get the best granary bread?

The big pile of bacon sandwiches sounds lovely as a before bed supper after the wrapping is done, the drinks are drunk and the kettles on though.

HavantGuard · 21/12/2013 20:19

Tuna steaks with ratatouille type stuff. Clementines and mince pies for afters.

hugoagogo · 21/12/2013 20:20

If I have people to stay it's always pasta and salad on christmas eve, so I think that sounds fine.

We usually have one from M&S Upcycled.

We also have prosecco to wash it down with, just saying' Grin

SidandAndyssextoy · 21/12/2013 20:22

A big pile of little party nibbles from the supermarket. No cooking required and it feels quite festive. We'll have been out for lunch, and out for mince pies and mulled wine, so will retreat for a very lazy evening.

MrsPnut · 21/12/2013 20:23

Chinese takeaway, I never cook on Christmas Eve!

Yama · 21/12/2013 20:24

We are having Beef Stew.

Lovely with red wine.

tarantula · 21/12/2013 20:27

Having spiced beef here. Irish tradition and can't get it here in England ready made so am marinading it myself. Debating whether to have it hot with mash or cold buffet with salad and chutney

Upcycled · 21/12/2013 20:29

Huuum, I think blondes sold me her idea.
I will pop into M&S then.

Can't comment on the prosecco though. I love it and sounds lovely with salmon and festive bits, but guests are supposed to provide all the drinks so I won't buy any.

They better have enough.

We are going to see our Swiss friends. We'll be eating swiss cheese fondue and swiss biscuits as we have done every year with them since we were small children :)
