We have PIL, BIL and SIL coming over on Christmas Eve and staying for Christmas day. We need to serve dinner. Thinking about spaghetti bolognese with lots of salad or lasagne with lots of salad.

Or should I change my mind?

I want something easy.

What are you going to serve to your family/guests on Christmas Eve?

We are having a seafood platter: Lobster grilled with garlic butter, scallops, prawns, oysters etc with a bottle of champagne - nice and luxurious before the family descends on Christmas Day!

ILikeToClean · 21/12/2013 20:45

BBQ pulled pork in wraps, done in the slow cooker all day so no effort as I'll be prepping for Xmas day .

mumeeee · 21/12/2013 22:18

MIL spends Christmas Eve with us so we always go out for a lovely lunch with her. We only pick in the evening as have eaten to much at lunch time:)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/12/2013 22:21

We always have vegetable grills (DH and I) Fish Fingers for the DC
Chips (loads) with salt and vinegar
Salad
Dips and ketchup

TikkaTurkey · 21/12/2013 23:47

We have a "Christmas Eve buffet." Basically party food Grin
Stuff you help yourself to like:

  • open sandwiches (ham, cheese etc)
  • pizza slices (a vegetarian pizza as well as a ham or pepperoni one)
  • crisps
  • onion bhajis/spring rolls
  • cocktail sausages/pork pie
- lots of fruit such as apples, bananas, satsumas

Kind of a tradition in our house now as we've done it for a good few years now and it would be strange if we suddenly did something else! Smile

HoHolepew · 21/12/2013 23:48

Always an Indian take away.

Bedtime1 · 22/12/2013 06:04

Beef BourGuignon with potato and celeriac gratin and mixed vegetables from m & s bar the vegetables.

cheesypastaplease · 22/12/2013 07:35

As I'm cooking the turkey on Christmas Eve - we are having turkey enchiladas/fajitas/quesadilla - basically whatever Old El Paso kit is on offer tomorrow!

msmiggins · 22/12/2013 07:45

We get a whole crispy duck with pancakes from local Chinese takeaway- OH and I will have smoked salmon - although I hear DD talking about langoustines with garlic- she has been a huge seafood fan since she was a toddler.

herladyship · 22/12/2013 08:20

Next door neighbour has a supper party every year Smile

She cooks an oven full of baked potatoes & provides loads of booze

Guests all bring a filling, works really well & it's nice to try a bit of everything if you're greedy like me

This year I'm taking a Paneer curry

Greentriangle82 · 22/12/2013 15:22

Chinese takeaway this year, usually have a buffet but fancy a takeaway for a change.

mrspremise · 22/12/2013 17:52

A joint of roast ham has become our traditional Christmas Eve supper. This year I'm going to do Duchesse potatoes, parsley sauce and green beans to go with.

catwithflowers · 22/12/2013 18:56

What a nice idea herladyship. I think we are having chicken and bean burritos and Mexican rice as requested by dd. Although gammon, baked potatoes and salad sounds nice too. Maybe we will have a vote.

DorothyBastard · 22/12/2013 19:03

We are having a big cat of bean chilli with rice, tortilla chips and various dips. We've got my DPs and my DB and family over for cocktails so thought rice would soak up the booze a bit...

DorothyBastard · 22/12/2013 19:06

In actual fact we're having a vat of chilli, and it's going to be vegetarian... No cats in sight

Hooleywhipper · 22/12/2013 19:42

We always have salmon and salad

CarmonEileen · 22/12/2013 19:46

We have our Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve Grin
All the family together at my parents house, then Christmas Day is buffet when we go over late afternoon. Less hassle for my dad as he does most of the cooking and can have a more relaxing day on Christmas day before the grandies descend on them Wink

SuckItAndSee · 22/12/2013 19:48

we always have fish
this year I'm doing a thai green curry with prawns and squid

MrsCakesPremonition · 22/12/2013 19:50

We also always have fish. Unfortunately the DCs hate all fish except tuna. So we will be having tuna steaks with garlic and herb butter. DH and I will have a few prawns with ours.

We will then spend Christmas Day reeking of garlic at the ILs Xmas Grin.

HermioneWeasley · 22/12/2013 19:50

Several different types of prawns with...dunno. Salad?

spilttheteaagain · 22/12/2013 21:54

Lasagne & salad here, then sticky toffee pudding.

nilbyname · 22/12/2013 22:00

Buffet with friends.

Adults- baked ham, mushroom pate, duck pate, salmon blinis, crudités and dips, olives, crisps, chutneys, crackers, breads, prosecco with cherry liqueur.

Kids- all that and ds has asked for chicken, fajitas, which I will do mini style with salsa and guacamole. Ds makes a rocking guacamole.

Then off to church half cut!

HeyMicky · 22/12/2013 22:05

We are doing a pierrade (hot stone). Prawns, tuna, beef and chicken strips. Crusty bread and a green salad. Lots of champagne. Delicious

tassisssss · 22/12/2013 22:07

This year I'm having my Christmas Eve dinner of ham, roast veg etc tomorrow as we're having pals over and we're eating pizza or fish fingers or pasta (or leftovers) on Tuesday.

Upcycled · 22/12/2013 22:30

I decided to do a buffet and it will be a lot of mixed food - just the way Dh's family like it.

So I remembered have in the freezer a paella (frozen from Lidl - never had it before) and will pump it up with some scallop.

Will also put on the table a potato salad, duck spring rolls, cocktail sausages, chicken satay skewers, prawn skewers, cherry tomatoes, camembert and cranberry parcels and gravdlax and cream cheese on sliced baguette.
