Jamie Oliver gravy is yuk

Ok have attempted to get ahead and make JO's gravy. All it tastes of is star anise and burned onion. I'll keep it to go on chips as its a) too expensive to chuck and b) is a bit Chinese-y.

Any better recipes? I have just made some normal chicken stock if that helps...

Thanks all for your replies. Re burnt onions...I followed instructions to roast it all for an hour beforehand which I think was when it 'overbrowned'. Star anise is too strong a taste in there for me.
Will use my normal stock on the day - go old style and last minute!
