It's fine yes. Soak the fruit for a day or two, then mature it for a week before you marzipan and ice it.

I was going to make a little one for my dad later in the week...was going to use orange juice rather than alcohol though because we drank the remains of the sherry bought for the cakes

oooh lovely I'll have a look at those, started soaking the fruit now.
