Can we all stop this disgusting Christmas collusion?

No one actually likes sprouts, do they? I mean really?
Everyone has them because 'it's traditional' and 'it wouldn't be Christmas without sprouts'. Not because 'sprouts are delicious, I would eat them every day if I could'

The tradition is just propaganda to fill the coffers of Big Sprout.

So let's all just say no this Christmas. No one will mind. Honest.

i love sprouts too

takingthathometomomma · 15/12/2013 12:06

I think this may be it! www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/brussels_sprouts_with_bacon_and_chestnuts/

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/12/2013 12:20

I love sprouts - but they have to be cooked right - so they are still crisp and nutty, not soggy and over done. And they have to come with chestnuts.

thenicknameiwantedisgone · 15/12/2013 12:24

DS2 used to love sprouts so much that he wanted to serve them at his birthday party (in Feb) Grin.

I persuaded him that the other kids may like them a bit less and perhaps traditional party food would be better.

He now hates them though Sad

Taffeta · 15/12/2013 12:25

The only thing I like them with is a robust beef stew. I think they are too overpowering to go with turkey.

MrsKwazii · 15/12/2013 12:27

Sprouts are evil. They taste foul and turn people into flatulent mobile stink-bombs. I hate them - and hear they're not keen on me either.

MrsKwazii · 15/12/2013 12:28

In actual fact, sprouts taste of meanness.

Chivetalking · 15/12/2013 12:30

Another sprout lover. With vinegar

Also second having them in curry. Lush Smile

whereisshe · 15/12/2013 12:30

I'm free from any sprouts obligation - I grew up in Australia not having a hot meal at Christmas (and in any case they're out of season in summer), and with a mother who didn't really like them so I wasn't subjected to them at any other time (probably a good thing - her vegetables tend towards the overdone end of the scale).

I'm very intrigued by the ongoing sprout angst that comes up every Christmas though!

SconeForAStroll · 15/12/2013 12:32

We are a split household - ds and I love sprouts, dh and dd loathe them. Which is great, more for us!

WaitingForMe · 15/12/2013 12:45

I love them. SIL has asked whether she could cook them when she and DB come this year. She has a family recipe but didn't want to step on my toes because she understands sprouts are important Grin

I'm quite curious to see what she'll be doing.

LittleMissGreen · 15/12/2013 13:05

Sprouts are gorgeous! However, apparently if you like them or not is genetic, because some people have a gene that makes them taste bitter, and some people don't.

D0oinMeCleanin · 15/12/2013 13:07

I love sprouts. I hate peeling them. I make the DC do that. It's how they "earn" their trip to the local working mens clubs to get their selection box Grin

MrsCakesPremonition · 15/12/2013 13:12

There are two sorts of sprouts.
Early sprouts are lovely, especially in full-on bacony, chestnuty Christmas mode.

Late sprouts which have been hit by frost are vile.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 15/12/2013 13:15

I love mine in horseradish. yummy!

MrsKwazii · 15/12/2013 13:48

MrsCakes there really is only one kind of sprout. Evil. In small, leafy and green form.

raisah · 15/12/2013 14:39

I put them in my vegetable curry & everybody including the most ardent sprout hater, my dh, are most surprised when I have told them they have eaten sprouts.

TheSecretOfTheNile · 15/12/2013 14:46

I saw a TV programme with Greg Wallace from Masterchef the other day and a food technologist from Waitrose. Apparently Waitrose have bred some 'sweeter' sprouts. I'm no sprout lover but might try these with butter, bacon and chestnuts.

TheSecretOfTheNile · 15/12/2013 14:47

According to the Tv, there are about 25 types of sprout (know-all telly watcher here)

FairyPenguin · 15/12/2013 14:50

I love sprouts. Shame the rest of my family don't. Try shredding them and frying with pancetta. Gorgeous.

msmiggins · 15/12/2013 14:50

I love sprouts- DD does too, in fact anything cabbagy we adore. Favourite is the really dark spring greens, I have been known to sit down with DD and have a huge plate of only dark green cabbage- nothing else- it's a real treat.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/12/2013 14:51

My dd2 (10) adores them. She thinks I'm the nicest mommy in the world when I buy them. Everyone else in the family rightly thinks they're disgusting.

If she didn't look exactly like me I'd think she were a changeling

Pollywallywinkles · 15/12/2013 16:09

We can't get enough sprouts here.

ouryve · 15/12/2013 16:12

I love sprouts.
DH loves sprouts.
Even DS1 likes them.

Must be the way you cook them.

msmiggins · 15/12/2013 16:15

What's not to love about sprouts? I think a lovely counterpoint to the heavy fat laden foods on the christmas plate.
As long as they are not overcooked, then they provide a lovely refeshing texture and sharp grassy taste amongst all the pigs in blankets ( some of us in Scotland call them kilted suasages btw), roasted spuds, meat and stuffing.
