What would you do for Christmas lunch if it's just two adults and two small children?

It's our first Christmas at home this year. I'm very excited as I love cooking and am looking forward to doing Christmas lunch with all the trimmings. But I'm now wondering what to actually cook, as there's just me, DH, and two DCs who love a roast but probably won't eat a full adult portion between them. Seems a bit daft to buy a whole turkey. Can you freeze cooked turkey to eat cold at a later point?

Get a turkey crown

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 10/12/2013 21:51

We have done individual poussin before
Less leftovers

TheDayOfMyDoctor · 10/12/2013 21:53

There will be three of us at home - me, DH and DS (5) and we're having a turkey crown plus all the trimmings. We'll use leftover turkey for sandwiches and a turkey curry to have at some point over the festive period when we want to have a lazy afternoon with minimal cooking.

We got a turkey breast portion from
Costco when it was just 4 of us last year. Smeared it with flavoured butter and fully wrapped in pancetta. Very easy to cook, moist, didn't have to get up at crack of dawn to put on, still had manageable leftovers afterwards.

enormouse · 10/12/2013 22:00

I'm doing a slow cooked ham with cranberry glaze with braised cabbage, mashed swede, roasties, carrots and parsnips.

This is for me, DP and toddler DS and that'll do sandwiches and leftovers too.

stuffedcrusty · 10/12/2013 22:17

Ahh, turkey crown sounds perfect. I had no idea!

I would do a beautiful organic chicken because it is nicer than turkey. And smaller, and not as expensive per kilo. You can still have all the other Christmas trimmings with it.

soontobeslendergirl · 10/12/2013 22:32

Get a Duck - it'll be a perfect size for you

ShoeWhore · 10/12/2013 22:38

I did duck when there were just us plus 2 dcs. With slightly tweaked trimmings.

And a lovely organic chicken when it was us plus 3 dcs. With usual trimmings.

Both were delicious (and significantly cheaper than turkey!)

olibeansmummy · 10/12/2013 22:38

We're having a turkey crown between 3 of us ( me, dh and 4 year old ds). There will be plenty of leftovers for sandwiches/ curry but not so much that we'll have to throw it away ( I hope anyway!)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/12/2013 22:39

DH and I are vegetarians (but the DC aren't)
In the past I've bought a whole free range chicken (reduced price) frozen it then cooked as directed.
The DC and my Dad ate it on the Christmas Day then I did some Chicken Nuggety pieces for Boxing Day (or Chicken Maggots as my DS used to call them ) Xmas Grin

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 10/12/2013 22:49

It's just me and ds (and the parrot) for Christmas but I still do Turkey,I just get a small one and make a casserole with the left overs (add chocolate to the casserole)

TamzinGrey · 10/12/2013 22:50

Go for the whole turkey I'd say. Cooked turkey freezes and defrosts perfectly and can be used in loads of ways from frozen weeks later.

The cooked meat lasts for ages in the fridge anyway. We never ever get tired of turkey sandwiches, turkey and ham pie, turkey curry and of course turkey and chips.

You just can't beat turkey with all the trimmings for Christmas dinner Xmas Smile

girlywhirly · 11/12/2013 07:55

There will be just DH and I and we will be having a chicken. Whether you have turkey crown or chicken, you can freeze slices in gravy for a 'quick' roast another time (reheat in the gravy and serve with roasted veg,) and use the smaller pieces in a curry or something.

Mintyy is right about the cost, we find a good free range chicken is so much tastier and better value per kg.

AnotherStitchInTime · 11/12/2013 08:11

We will be doing chicken as neither me or dh like turkey. Other options are duck, salmon, pheasant, poussin, quail, beef or lamb.

ProfYaffle · 11/12/2013 08:20

We're having duck.

addictedtosugar · 11/12/2013 08:34

Were having the smallest turkey the butcher does (he says serves 5-6) for me, DH, a 4 yrs old and a 2 yr old.
Turkey crowns don't work for us, as its the brown meat they will fight over.
Then eat turkey in various forms for a couple of days - ham and turkey pie, turkey noodles, turkey and jacket potatoes, turkey sandwiches.... you get the idea.
Will see how fed up of turkey we get - first time there havn't been more adults.

BigWellyLittleWelly · 11/12/2013 12:04

We're having a four bird roast from our butcher, chicken, duck, pheasant and a bit of turkey stuffing from what I remember. It will feed dh, me and two children at least three if not four meals.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 11/12/2013 12:07

I thought the whole point of turkey was to cater for larger crowds, partridge. You are totally freed up having just the four of you, smaller birds, and pheasant, or four bird roast or something, beautiful rib of beef....

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 11/12/2013 12:08

x post BIG.

Edit to my post need to move the partridge to the other sentance, am not calling you a partridge op. Smile

HerlockSholmes · 11/12/2013 12:08

i would just do a whole turkey and use the extra meat in a pie, curry or sandwiches.

you could get a turkey crown though if you wanted less leftover.

we have a repeat of christmas dinner for boxing day so there is never too much excess.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 11/12/2013 12:08

Duck, Alyesbury would be nice too.

MummyPig24 · 11/12/2013 14:38

This is our first Christmas at home, me, dh and the dcs who are 6 and 3. I've ordered a turkey crown. It says serves 6-10 so we will have loads of leftovers, planning turkey pie and turkey sandwiches!
