What would you do for Christmas lunch if it's just two adults and two small children?

It's our first Christmas at home this year. I'm very excited as I love cooking and am looking forward to doing Christmas lunch with all the trimmings. But I'm now wondering what to actually cook, as there's just me, DH, and two DCs who love a roast but probably won't eat a full adult portion between them. Seems a bit daft to buy a whole turkey. Can you freeze cooked turkey to eat cold at a later point?

What I did one year was to get some nice sliced Turkey, of the bone, from the deli counter and just heat it in the oven in a casserole dish in some gravy. We were having duck but little one wanted Turkey. It was lovely, proper meat but lovely and moist.

You could do goose. Much bigger carcass so a small bird does far fewer people than a similarly sized turkey. I did one for just me and DH and we weren't swimming in leftovers or anything. I also took off one leg and confitted it which was delish

get a duck. or a turkey crown ( or other joint)

We will be having Christmas dinner just my DH, the 2 DDs and I this year. We will either buy the largest chicken we can find or will buy a turkey crown, cover it with bacon and have that.

I love boxing day leftovers - basically everything from Christmas day again, so hope there will be plenty of leftovers.

There are only three of us and we are having partridge, one each and all the trimmings

. Last year there were four and i did pheasant , (2 birds and it was too much) I've already got mine in the freezer as they aer cheaper further away from christmas . . ,

Boxing day we will be seven and its roast pork and crackling (yum) or Hugh fearnley W's mincemeat stuffed pork tenderloin which I did last year to great acclaim ( also v cheap to do!)

It's just me, DP and 3yr old DS. We're having a turkey crown, all the trimmings. DS does eat a fair bit but we will save a lot of it for bubble and squeak on Boxing Day!

Erm, yeah! I've ordered m&s so I can just chuck it in the oven and play with the dc (3 & 1) It says serves 6 so we'll be eating Christmas dinner til, er, next Christmas!

TheRaniOfYawn · 12/12/2013 17:19

We will be having a big organic chicken with all the trimmings.

Pollywallywinkles · 12/12/2013 17:34

Chicken here too. You an have the same trimmings as you would with turkey as you could with pork.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 12/12/2013 18:30

We did this a few years ago and had a large chicken with all the traditional trimmings. Was fab.

SammyandBilly · 12/12/2013 19:26

We're in exactly the same position OP, first year in our own home for Christmas day with two young DCs.

There is no point getting a whole turkey, so DH and I are going to get a pork joint because we prefer pork and the DCs are going to share a regular chicken breast between them.

They'll have some pigs in blankets, roast potatoes and veg too and DH and I will have the gravy, stuffing, pork crackling aswell.

Snowbility · 12/12/2013 19:36

We're having a rib of beef. Did turkey last year, it was pretty uninspiring and it took us till March to finish the leftovers.

SmallestInTheClass · 12/12/2013 19:39

We had just that last year, me, DH 1 year old and 3 year old. We did chicken like a few others. For me it's all about the trimmings (stuffing, cranberry sauce, bread sauce, pigs in blankets etc) and all those things go really well with chicken.
