Curiosity- Do you have an Xmas stocking. If so, who fills it?

DP and I don't do this, we just get each other small gifts that go under the tree and things throught the year that we know each other would like but I have read on some xmas threads (this year and last) of people doing advent calendars for their OH and mentioning things they/their OH might like in their stocking. I've also seen stockings (and advent calendars) geared at adults. if you do this, don't FC believing DC ask any questions about it (i.e why you're getting a stocking)?

We do it. I do a stocking for DH and do mine too, although DH usually adds something to mine. This year my SIL and her daughter are coming to ours, so I've done a stocking for SIL to (she'll do her DD's).

The DC don't question it because it's what they've always seen, although they are only 1 & 3 so questions might come later.

We also have advent calendars, although this year the whole family is having the fillable one with chocolate coins and bits in it.

I like it, and the stocking is a good excuse to get a few bits and pieces that I want but can't necessarily justify through the year.

Bigbrassband · 27/11/2013 08:15

DH fills mine and I do his, we don't really get each other large presents at Christmas so the stockings get filled with small thoughtful things that we know the other would enjoy.

cogitosum · 27/11/2013 08:20

I get one from my parents still Blush

So does dh. They're lovely and not just filled with tat. My mum enjoys doing them and they're extremely generous. She'll be doing one for ds too.

phantomhairpuller · 27/11/2013 08:21

My mum still does mine BlushWink

ilovepowerhoop · 27/11/2013 08:23

We only do stockings for the dc's. We all have a chocolate advent calendar this year though.

TallyGrenshall · 27/11/2013 08:26

I get one. It's filled by whoever is hosting everyone that year, and then all the guests buy a couple of little things to make up the hosts stocking.

When I lived away, my mum made me one

fuzzpig · 27/11/2013 08:29

We do! We used to do it before DCs and then didn't bother, but last year we agreed to do them again. So now there are 4 stockings :)

They are all filled by Santa just for consistency's sake. But basically DH chooses mine (though I did buy myself a few bits this year Blush) and I choose his. We have to be careful not to let DCs see/choose our stocking fillers as it'd ruin the Santa illusion. DH dropped the ball on that one last year and I've not let him forget it

fuzzpig · 27/11/2013 08:29

Oh ilove you've reminded me I need to get my advent calendar :o

peaz · 27/11/2013 08:42

We all get stockings here (DS 1 & 2, DH and me). I do all of the stockings apart from mine and DH does mine. He is usually pretty good at stuff like that.

DM is staying Christmas Eve so she will be getting one too.

TheSurgeonsMate · 27/11/2013 08:49

What would the difficult question be? Can Santa not bring everyone presents?

TodaysAGoodDay · 27/11/2013 08:57

My DS and I have one each. I get a couple of things in mine from my DB (and a few little things I buy myself Blush) and 'Santa' fills DS's on Xmas eve.

insanityscratching · 27/11/2013 09:11

We all have one heredh, me, 4 adult children and dd (10). I fill them all but my own dh does that with help from adult dd.Stockings are the favourite bit of the day for them all. I try and fill them with things they'd like, some practical stuff and some fun bits as well.

hallowisitmeyourelookingfor · 27/11/2013 09:16

FC doesn't bring any grown up presents in our house, just children. The dc made their dad a proper felt stocking last year which we filled up together as they wanted to. It's was just it put under the tree with all his and our other presents, so it was more like a gift bag really. He didn't do me one, I didn't expect him to. We aren't doing it this year as our present to each other is new doors and windows for our extension!!

joymaker · 27/11/2013 10:13

Thank you for satisfying my curiosity Smile. I love the fact the although we celebrate the same festival there are slight differences in the way we choose to do things, it's interesting.cogitosum and phantom that's so sweet that your parents still do that. Do your DC know it's from them or do they think the gifts are from FC?

peaz do you /will you say they are from the people who fill them or from FC when they are more aware?

TheSurgeonsMate of course FC can bring presents to everyone Wink (I assume this is what happens in your house?) but most people follow the tradition of saying FC comes to all (good) children that's why I wondered.

My mum still and I do one for her!

CrotchStitch · 27/11/2013 10:33

We Father Christmas does one for DS(9), up till this year the adults didn't bother. This year though we are having stockings too (me, DH, DM & DDad) as I am hoping to save the main presents until after the pub church :o
I have done my DPs (DH smiles and nods enthusiastically) and they are doing ours- I am almost insanely excited :)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/11/2013 10:36

Dh and I do stockings for eachother. We explained it to the dses thusly - once you stop believing in Father Christmas, he can't come and bring you presents any more, so your parents take over (so no-one is disappointed) - and dad and I have carried on doing that for eachother, just for fun.

I always made sure I had specific wrapping paper for the stocking presents, that wasn't used for any other presents, but dh and I used paper from the stuff that I used for wrapping the presents for under the tree, so they were clearly not from FC.

I still do this now, and the dses are 16, 18 and 20!

TheSurgeonsMate · 27/11/2013 10:53

There wasn't a great emphasis on the "naughty or nice" factor in my childhood. I do remember the often repeated tale of my grandmother receiving a lump of coal in her stocking because she said she didn't believe in father christmas Shock. This happened before I was born, obviously, because by the time I was on the scene she was back in the programme and her stocking was bulging like everyone elses's.

Blithereens · 27/11/2013 11:11

I have two! One from DH and one from DM. And I'm not giving them up either Grin

I do one for each of them too.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 27/11/2013 11:28

I don't have a stocking any more Sad

My mum used to do me one every year until I had children then she wouldn't do it any more! I told my girls that Father Christmas brought me a stocking until they were born and then they got them istead.

I love your idea that once you stop believein in Father Christmas he stops coming and your parents take ove SDTG, I will have to remember that one when mine start questioning.

joymaker · 27/11/2013 14:34

Definately don't do that Blithereens!

Sootica I can unerstand why you would miss that established tradition Does your mum know you miss it?

I imagine once my DC are grown up I will still want to do one for them much like SDTG regardless of whether they still want one BlushSmile

Yep we do adult stockings here too, although we only started this about 5 years ago when DCs were 13 and 11. They love helping me with DHs and shopping with DH for mine.
We buy mostly small items with the odd CD/book or something- always choccy coins, favourite magazine, a booze miniature, some toiletries etc.

A tradition we started a couple of years ago, is kids get up and walk dogs early ish ( gets later every year as they get older), come back and make us all a cuppa and bring it up to our bed where they wake us with the stocking and they snuggle into the other end of our bed while we drink tea and open our stockings.

It's a nice way to spend some family time on our own when we have a house ful of visitors. This year have MIL and FIL and DH SIS and her DH staying, but last time they came we did stockings for them, they didn't really get the point of it and were a bit puzzled so probably won't bother. My DM and DF came last year and loved the stockings as they had never had them, not even as kids. DF is 78 this year and he was like a big kid opening his favourite sweets, footie magazine, some DIY gizmo he'd mentioned seeing etc.
Its good fun and they still talk about it now!

Weeantwee · 27/11/2013 15:17

My mil puts together our stockings. She has always done it for DH and sil and she insisted that I should get one now too. It's usually filled with chocolates and standard day to day toiletries, nothing fancy, just stuff that we would ordinarily buy ourselves. It's great because I don't have to buy shampoo, moisturiser or shower gel for at least 6 months!
