I'm going to do a ham in the slow cooker on Christmas eve.

I will serve with potato gratin and spiced red cabbage and apple.

Will that be too dry? Do I need a gravy or sauce?

Apple sauce?

Ooh yes apple sauce, why didn't I think of that!

Cumberland sauce?

lifesgreatquestions · 26/11/2013 20:21

I wouldn't have a sauce!

HotCrossPun · 26/11/2013 20:23

I'd do a honey & mustard sauce.

MrsMillions · 26/11/2013 20:31

We usually have ratatouille with a ham, although not sure that would combine too well with red cabbage. Apple sauce sounds good.

Allalonenow · 26/11/2013 23:56

They all sound good, I'd do a creamy green peppercorn sauce.

kateandme · 27/11/2013 04:14

what about a honey glaze sauce
or straining the cooking liquid left from the ham and thickening in a pan with some cornflour(mixed first with a bit of water) and perhaps a dash of mustard.

nooka · 27/11/2013 04:29

I don't think you need a sauce, as both the gratin and the red cabbage should be pretty juicy/saucy. Sounds lovely :)

callmekitten · 27/11/2013 04:31

I vote thicken up the ham juice. That's all you need.

Sometimes I do cauliflower cheese with ham to provide a "sauce". However, that wouldn't work well with the cabbage or potato gratin, I usually do mash and carrots with it. I think the liquid already in the cabbage and gratin will be fine with your ham.

Onion sauce :) Yummy!

Soften lots of onions in butter (don't let them brown) and then add them to a plain white sauce :) Delicious!

Littlemissexpecting · 27/11/2013 12:42

I would have cranberry sauce Grin

I generally find gratin creamy enough to work as a chunky sauce with ham, plus you've got the lovely melted glaze from the ham as well. I never bother with sauce.
