Do you open it immediately in front of them or take it home to unwrap on Christmas Day?

I fall under the latter category.

Christmas gifts given early are taken home and put under the tree.

I say "oh, how lovely, I'll really look forward to opening this on Christmas day", which allows them to say that I simply must open it now. Which I then happily do.

Ooh Charlotte, good one, I always feel
Awkward and wonder if they want me to open immediately

If its for me I save it as I don't get much anymore, if its for the LO then she can open it there and then.

I do similar to Charlotte and see what they want me to do, when I give a gift I like it when it's opened in front of me but wouldn't mind if they took it home.

Under the tree for definite Grin that way the excitement of seeing lots of lovely presents under the tree builds up! I only have young dc's and it would be confusing if they had presents at different times. I spoke to my friends about this and they were happy- sent videos of dc's opening gifts to friend on Christmas Day so they could see the reaction
