Am I daft to think about putting gifts out under the tree with a toddler?

It looks so so much prettier with gifts under it. DD is and is well behaved but I thought it might be too much temptation for her!

Anyone successfully done this?

I wouldn't risk it myself. Been stung that way before. Maybe wrap a few empty boxes so you get the effect but no harm done when/if the inevitable happens?

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 23/11/2013 13:30

I made this mistake twice! Grin I wouldnt- unless your toddler is hreat at self control!

jeee · 23/11/2013 13:35

Er, yes, you're definitely daft. And torn up scraps of half-eaten wrapping paper really won't make the tree look prettier.

If your DD is anything like mine, you'll be very lucky to have the tree intact by Christmas Day, never mind pretty parcels under it.

SteamWisher · 23/11/2013 13:37

Yes!!

Empty boxes wrapped up. That's my plan.

Elizadoesdolittle · 23/11/2013 13:37

With DD1 it was fine. At first I wasn't going to put a tree up at all. When she paid no attention to that I put some presents for the adults round it and she didn't blink an eye. This year however she is at that age where it is too much of an temption. plus DD2 is at that destructive age so I won't risk it.

So it really depends but maybe not a risk worth taking, unlesd you are happy to re wrap stuff.

princesscupcakemummyb · 23/11/2013 13:37

we dont put the presents under our tree because m y 4 & 2 year old would rip them all open lol so what we do is put the presents under the tree just few days before xmas to take photos of them for the memorys then put them all away after

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 23/11/2013 13:38

I did it up until last year but now my DS is 3 I just can't see it working Grin

Mumof3xx · 23/11/2013 13:39

Santa brings the presents!

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 23/11/2013 13:40

Santa doesnt bring the presents we buy for others!

Mumof3xx · 23/11/2013 13:44

Hmm true
I wouldn't put them under the tree though

Floggingmolly · 23/11/2013 13:50

Do you really have all the presents displayed under the tree for the duration? Confused. Ours go under in Christmas Eve when the kids are finally asleep.

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 23/11/2013 13:54

yeah ..... looks beautiful!

FortyFacedFuckers · 23/11/2013 13:54

I always put the presents under my tree as I wrap them (not DS's) and never had a problem he always knew they weren't his and not to touch them.

VerySmallSqueak · 23/11/2013 13:55

Yes,you are lets say optomistic !

Thumbwitch · 23/11/2013 13:59

Yes. If you want pretty, then fake presents is the way to go - but they'll still probably get shredded.

I have a 13mo toddler at the moment; I make great use of his playpen to keep him safe and me sane. But I will need to put the Christmas tree in a playpen as well - luckily MIL has one too, so we'll borrow that one and use one for the tree and one for the toddler. That way I still get my sanity time, and he still gets time to roam relatively freely around the house, but the tree is safe from marauding toddler hands. It's a fakey one too so I think I'll be missing off the bottom couple of layers of branches this year to keep things more out of reach...

ScienceRocks · 23/11/2013 14:02

I put presents under the tree as I wrap them. The DDs (now aged 7 and 3) have always managed to resist the urge to inspect them, maybe because it has always been that way.

So if you think it can work, then go for it.

raisah · 23/11/2013 14:07

My friend used to put all her presents under the tree until her house was broken into the week before & everything stolen...she was understandably devastated. Now everything is stored in the loft until needed.

chanie44 · 23/11/2013 14:23

I think it depends on the child. Ds was never interested in the tree or presents.

Dd will be 16 months at Xmas so we have no idea what she will do.

Our tree is in the corner of the room, so any presents we don't want them going near, go at the back, out of reach.

LaRegina · 23/11/2013 14:29

Just out of intest OP - does that mean you've put your tree up already?

AuditAngel · 23/11/2013 14:37

Last year we put the tree behind a Babydan playpen/room divider with presents for other people inside. DD2 was 2, she was fine with it. Haven't decided yet if we'll use the playpen this year, it has been put away in the loft.

Meglet · 23/11/2013 14:39

yes. I put the odd little present out but generally I pile them up on Xmas Eve evening.

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 23/11/2013 14:41

No, not yet. Wont be going up til the 20th dec. Just pondering.
