Kids are 10, 7 and 5 and it's a joint Christmas gift (admittedly mostly for 10yo ds as we don't have a wii).

I realise there's a big price difference between old and new but I don't want ds to "need" the new one in about 2 years time, would kind of like this to be it.

WWYD?

the only really two differeances are

the prices.. the one cost 400 plus where as you can get the 360 for 150

secondly the one does have a blue ray player on, which i a nice bonous really.

if you can afford the one i would say go for it. itll last years. but equally so will the 360, your still be able to get the same games.

Will you get one before Christmas now though? They all sold out everywhere yesterday as far as Im aware (of course I could be completely wrong there) Usually when a new console comes out you need to pre-order them (or be very lucky) to get one before Christmas.

I think 360 due to the cost alone and think about getting a better one when they are more readily available and possibly cheaper.

tassisssss · 23/11/2013 11:41

Ah hadn't thought about pre-ordering (new to this world and dh not really engaging yet, he doesn't do Christmas until Dec). Looks like it'll be 360 then...

Few questions:
will the old games be able to be played on the new one?

will they start making all the new games that don't work on the 360? (as with 3DS games, grrrr).
what exactly is a blue ray player? (sorry)

My understanding is that 360 games won't play on the One and there aren't that many games available for the One yet. Games makers will still release in 360 format for a long time yet, silly not to.

Blu ray is like a fancy DVD player. Films in blu ray are much better definition than DVD. You can play DVDs on a BT machine but not the other way round.

The latest 360 has been updated in terms of graphics and processor. Microsoft have said that they will still sell games/accessories for another few years then support for a further few more until it is time to 'retire' it.

360- £170 ish (bundles available)
wider range of games
DVD player
One games CANNOT be played on the 360

Xbox One- £429 ish
Limited range of games so far
360 games CANNOT be played on the One
Has apps to watch TV/films through the xbox

There are more differences but they are not so important.

The prices for the new games are Shock too as well as limited.

We've just bought the 360 so the kids can have a variety of games and loads of memory. We're happy to upgrade in 3 years.

It's fab!I've been won over.Grin

wonderingsoul · 23/11/2013 12:01

you can watch netflix and sky go plus loads more ont he 360.. long as you have a liveaccount.
aswell

Retropear · 23/11/2013 12:05

I swear DVDs are better through the XBox,Harry Potter seems less dark.

It may just be me though.Grin

We have the new one and it is amazing. Much better than the 360 (which dd has) but I think for those ages a 360 will be fine. The things that make it so good probably wont appeal to dc much. Its thinhs like the voice controls and skype that I love. The old kinect is still good. The dd's are on just dance on the old one now.

Games wont be transferable thiugh I dont think.

tassisssss · 23/11/2013 12:19

This is all REALLY helpful. thanks so much people.

Anyone seen good deals on 360?

Xbox 360 games won't be playable on the new Xbox One. Once a new console is launched, support and new games tend to dry up for the old console. There's nothing wrong with the 360 right now and there's a great range of games available, but you'll no doubt be badgered by your kids in 18-24 months for the new console as there are no new games being released for the 360.

Microsoft in particular are really poor at supporting gaming products after the launch of a new console.
