ipod with speakers for a five year old?

My five year old has requested an ipod. His friend has one which docks into something then they listen to music together.

I don't want to spend a lot given he is only five but what / where is my best option for this sort of thing?

Thanks

We got an iPod nano for their 5th birthday and it docks into a little speaker system that was under £50 from Maplins.
Tesco were doing iPods under vouchers at one point but be aware of the newer iPods which have a lightning connector and docking systems that have the original 30pin connector.

Crumbs twins! Did you get two nanos?!

Not sure what you mean by the lightening connector and original 30pin connector?

No, we only got the one nano as it was always intended to be used through a speaker system and not headphones. We didn't fancy having Gangnam Style vs Taylor Swift at full volume competitions either.

The new iPods have a different type of connector (called lightning) for charging and docking, like the iPhone 5/5s. The original iPods and iPhone upto 4s have a different kind of charger socket (known as 30 pin as there are 30 pins in the cable). You can't use the same charging cable for an older iPod and a new one.

The docking systems for the newer iPods are harder to find as they are much newer. The Sony one I was intending to buy was described online as having the new lightning connector but in reality it was not so I'm relieved I didn't order it online. It is possible to buy a conversion cable but that adds more to the bill and something else to break. So, you really need to check very carefully that the speaker docking system is compatible with the iPod you buy.

Dosey, if the iPod has the wider 30pin connector, there are loads of docking/speakers stations.

I have a little speaker that plugs into the headphone socket of my ipod which is rechargeable via a USB cable. Gets round the connector issue and costs about £10 from Amazon
