Berlin before Christmas - what to bring back?

Me and DH are off to Berlin for a couple of days before Christmas (without the kids Shock), coming back on the 23rd.
I know the Christmas markets are a big deal in Berlin. Does anyone know what kind of lovely food would be worth saving some room in the suitcase for?

Those lovely German cake/biscuit things that taste like, erm, not sure what they taste like but they come in all different shapes and some have icing sugar on, some chocolate etc. something küchen.

I lived in Berlin years and years ago, when there was still an RAF base there and I am so jealous! Go to Ka De Wei if you can, it's a huge apartment store and I can remember getting really excited about it! (I was 10 mind). We used to cross to East Berlin and go to the toys shops there.

Sorry turned into a reminisce!!!

Very jealous Smile.

I would second going to KaDeWe (short for Kaufhaus des Westen - department store of the west), it's a bit like Harrods/Selfridges, take a look at the food department.

I would bring back marzipan, Zimtsterne (star shaped cinnamon biscuits), Spekulatius biscuits (lovely thin buttery Christmas biscuits), Stollen, Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Gluhwein (Mulled wine) and lovely Christmas tree decs from the market.

Have a lovely time and don't forget, it can get REALLY cold over there!

Thanks for the recommendations! Will see if I can drag DH into a department store... Really looking forward to it, and borrowing a huge down coat if a friend. Grin

Very jealous! I love Germany at Christmas, especially Berlin. The markets are wonderful, brilliant to buy unusual baubles and decorations, and there is an outdoor skate rink at one of them as well if you are feeling romantic!

The Zimtsterne are amazing - especially if you can find somewhere where they are just taking them out of the oven!

I second wrapping up well, though: I remember wearing tights, leggings and jeans and still spending half an hour warming up when I got back inside.

Have fun Envy
