MIL is always tough to buy for but I've got no inspiration at all. She is widowed and lives next door to BIL, has a dog and enjoys reading. We've bought her gorgeous slippers in the past, garden vouchers (she has a garden but BIL maintains it for her), a kindle (which she does use) but I'm totally lost this year. We don't live in the same country (she's in Scotland) so I need to send it but I'd like to get her something really nice. I always do a calendar of photos of the DDs so will do that again this year but need a main pressie... Help!

Amazon vouchers for her kindle, copy of her favourite childhood book, signed book from her favourite author, nice warm scarf/hat for dog walking, spa day, hamper with posh chocolate/coffee/biscuits

When you say not in the same country ..... would a plane ticket to visit you for your New Year be out of the question?

National Trust for Scotland membership

I'm thinking of a magazine subscription for my MiL. We're in almost exactly the same situation, but she's the other end of the country.

watching with GREAT interest!

I feel for you OP. I have never been so thrilled as the day my DM announced that she had got herself an allotment. Before that she had zero hobbies and present buying was a nightmare. Now it's seeds, gloves and bee houses all the way :o
For your MiL how about a nice dog book? Framed photo of her dog. Nice warm socks, gloves, scarf and hat for dog walking. Sturdy boots/ decent Welles (depending on budget!)

wellies obviously :)

Digital photo frame loaded with family photos.

Wow, some great ideas! She has wellies and we gave her a gorgeous cashmere shawl last year, we've also done the digital photo frame and for some reason she never plugs it in.... She is really not a spa person and we gave BIL and his family an NTS membership last year and she goes with them. However... magazine subscription is a good idea, also like the bee house idea. BIL and SIL will probably get a hamper as they host a lot over Xmas.... Thanks!
