Present ideas for a 7 year old boy?

I have no idea what 7 year old boys are into. I've asked the parents and they've said money. (As they always do!) Any ideas? If it's noisy or annoying even better!

Lego. It's all my DS wants and all he talks about. Although he was very impressed by a recent gift of a magic set.

Thank you for all your ideas! Budget about £20. I should have mentioned that his parents are a bit miserable and don't like anything fun, esp if it's noisy. He's not allowed lego, not sure why. I think he likes Science things. My sister has bought him a magic set already.
The other problem is that if you buy anything they don't like it goes to the charity shop.

Poor chap not allowed Lego - think my now just 8yo DS probably believes he would die without it!

Best birthday toys were a golf club, an origami set, one of those WWF "adopt an animal" packs and "Horrible Science" books.

The hex bugs were a disappointment in our house.

I am astounded that he isn't allowed Lego. It keeps my two boys occupied for hours. It gives me loads of peace but it is a bugger when stepped on.

Cambridge brainbox electronic set (look on Amazon). Looks worthy, has lots of writing about kS1 and Ks2 on the box, is about £20. My son got his for his 7th birthday 2 weeks ago and is yet to put it down. My husband is itching to have a go. Limited noise but loads of fun (apparently)

He has got a younger brother and his mother is house proud. I just don't think they like him to enjoy himself. My 3 year old loves his mega blocks and can't imagine him not being allowed lego. As somebody said to me recently, you can't choose your family!!

Any ideas for a 7 year old boy's birthday present? Our son is turning 7 and we're constantly battling against the electronic devices (as most parents are) desperately trying to find something alternative to buy him for his birthday! He no longer bothers with Lego or any other typical toys for that matter but we feel there must be something out there! What do your sons do/play with when not attached to screens? Any suggestions welcome!
