I have name changed or could be outed!

We have recently bout our DS who is 7 just under 2 acre woods next door to our house. He doesn't know yet but will set up a treasure hunt for Christmas morning for him to find it...I would also like to have a chest full of things in the woods for him to find. Like a den type camouflage thing, binoculars. Any other ideas?

Tarpaulin, rope, tent pegs and washing pegs = easy to build den.

Books on identifying local wildlife

Some kind of nature log book/journal

Waterproof camera

Penknife!

BristleWorm · 14/11/2013 21:31

Ooh, and one of those bug catcher boxes where the lid is a magnifying glass?

Butterfly net?

Kikibee · 14/11/2013 21:31

bristle luggage with those ideas you're welcome down! Lol

Thank you, so many ideas...I've bought a penknife thanks to someone on Reasties thread and he has a bug catcher.

I will hunt the web amazon to see if I can find everything listed. Thanks again.

compass?

Fab present btw....although now I'm wondering if I could wrap up the jungle our back garden as an outdoor adventure gift for my two Hmm Grin

CorrieDale · 14/11/2013 21:52

I got DS some camo netting on eBay for his 'dragon cave' bedroom it was a big hit!

Google 'real adventure den kit' - this was DS1's Xmas present last year.

2 bits of tarpaulin one for over & one for under

Water carrier (a camping one - esp for summer)
Lots of rope/string

If you can go & cut some longer bits of wood and trim them for making dens with (otherwise buy a couple of washing line poles)

Bucket BBQ would be cheaper than that rather lovely fire bowl (same idea)

Umm for penknife skills start out with peeling veg with a horizontal veg peeler as it will help with the dexterity needed.

Books to identify trees/plants/birds/insects

Hibernation homes for insects or bird boxes

A trolley or truck to drag things in

Some of those coloured plastic/rubber buckets to hold things in

LittleMissGreen · 14/11/2013 22:41

Some marshmallows to toast on a fire?

lolalotta · 14/11/2013 22:45

Telescope?

BristleWorm · 15/11/2013 08:50

Oh I love love love the myriad fire pit. Maybe DH is also planning to buy me a wood so I can justify getting one?

walkie talkies

feetheart · 15/11/2013 09:44

DSis made DS a den-kit for his 8th birthday last week - it included a whistle with inbuilt compass, a foldable mug, a bivouac tarpaulin thing, a spork and a big 'army-style' bumbag that will carry lots of stuff. She looked at a Bear Grylls one but decided she could do better :)
DS LOVES it and dragged most of it out on a long walk at the weekend.

If you get walkie talkies go for decent ones not the kiddie ones. We got DC a set from Argos for about £30 a few Christmas' ago. They have been used a lot, including for school events and camping trips and have a brilliant range - the most common use at the moment is to tell me they are on their way back from the park and could I please put the hot chocolate on :)

Ds is getting a kit like this without the 2 acres

In it I've put:

Spirit level and torch all in one
Survival bracelet
Camo tarpaulin
Camo net
Led tent pegs
Pop up 2 man tent
Compass
Notebook - things to do before you're 11 & 3/4
Tin mug
Camo water bottle

Might get him a sleeping bag
