ds (9) likes tinkering about making stuff and i thought it would be good and a change from Lego. However, I think it's a bit pricey at £45 (or near as dammit) and would like to ask you wise lot (who may have already bought it previously) what you/your dc think of it

ta!

Absolutely worth every penny IMO. I bought it a few years ago for my eldest son who was around 10 at the time. He loved it, and it was hardy enough to be passed down to next DS. Still going strong.

It was on the bargain thread the other day and everyone was raving about it. Shop around ;)

Watching this as my DCs are a bit young right now but it's on the cards for the future.

It's funny that it's so well regarded, as most John Adams stuff (chocolate coin maker anyone :o) is supposedly complete shite!

Yes definitely, my home educated DD1 has used it loads. I got another set off Amazon for DD2 for £29.99 a few days ago.

We've bought the John Lewis electronic sets for £30 pretty similar and we have a friend whose parents raved about theirs.

Ds got this last Christmas and loves it. It's not one of those constant use presents but he has really enjoyed it.

Sure we only paid about £35 for it though.

Fab. DSs 8 and 6 both love it.

If you need a laugh, I recommend reading the 1* reviews for the JA chocolate coin maker on amazon. There's one in particular that I re-read every now and then purely for comedy value.
I can't comment on the hotwire thing as we don't have it, though every thing we have bought from JA has in all honesty ended up in the wheelie bin within 2 days!
