Ukulele... for an adult? Crazy/lame idea or good?

I'm kind of tempted to ask for one for Xmas... my hands are too small for a guitar... there's the added bonus that my DD could learn too presumably? (She's 6 and just starting to read music for recorder)

Any advice? :)

It can't be lame if it's what you want!

fuzzpig · 12/11/2013 21:06

Well that's true :o I'm not sure if I do though... love guitar music and the general idea of playing/singing but couldn't get on with the guitar due to size and my delicate piano fingers couldn't handle the thicker steel strings

Presumably you can technically play any song on it but it's just that it's arranged differently as it's got 4 strings not 6? I've never actually seen one up close but keep seeing it mentioned on here...

Go for it!

Also, look up the ukulele orchestra playing smells like teen spirit on YouTube, amazing.

snowballinafryingpan · 12/11/2013 21:07

they are fabulous, give for it. Have you heard the ukulele orchestra playing NirvanaSmile
our primary had all the kids and teachers playing them a few years ago. All the kids loved them.

I did an adult ukulele class at a festival this summer, was lots of fun.

My too-cool-for-school db plays in a ukulele orchestra, so it must be ok.

MyBoilsAreFab · 12/11/2013 21:20

Get one! I got my DH one last year, and he loves it. I also bought him the book "AC/DC for ukeleke" Grin The uke orchestra is fab, would love to go and see them.

There is something really sexy about watching your DH play a musical instrument!

fuzzpig · 12/11/2013 21:31

The one I've found is a soprano ukulele, is soprano the right/normal type?!

Go for it!
We have a local, all adult, ukulele group, that play at village things, looks a lot of fun.

I think DDs musical DF(17) has been teaching herself too.

I'd love to learn the guitar, but know I'd be hopeless (being useless at piano, violin and oboe).

DD says base guitar, which also has 4 strings is fun and not to hard. She is also failed at violin and flute. However, she sings, seriously and passes exams Envy

Nothing wrong with a uke for an adult. Have a look at the ukulele underground forums for advice on what to get on what budget.

Pogosticks · 12/11/2013 21:43

We got my dad one from Duke of Uke and he was v pleased!

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 12/11/2013 21:44

I love mine although I still haven't mastered it. My ambition is to join the Ukulele Orchestra of GB.

DramaAlpaca · 12/11/2013 21:45

My SIL took up the ukelele a couple of years ago & she loves it.

Huitre · 12/11/2013 21:47

Look up Joe Brown's Ukulele Album. Absolutely brilliant. I am thinking of learning, too!

Didactylos · 12/11/2013 21:51

I gave DP ( a very good guitarist) a ukelele for christmas and we have a great video of DS, then age 2 dancing to an acoustic ukelele version of ac/dc thunderstruck
thinking it should really be a christmas tradition Grin

iheartdusty · 12/11/2013 21:54

I am going to get DH one of their DVDs for Christmas, thanks for the inspiration! Think I have to go for "Anarchy in the Ukulele" for the name alone!

Clobbered · 12/11/2013 22:04

Watch this!!

Clobbered · 12/11/2013 22:05

There are loads of ukelele tutorials on Youtube - it's so easy to learn. Have fun!

I'm 19 and love my ukulele! I know lots of adults older than me who are into it too (it does help that I also play 6 string acoustic guitar, but it's by no means a pre-requisite) - at my secondary school, the music teacher ended up teaching everyone ukulele instead of recorder or keyboard - it was great, everyone was walking around school with their ukes and it really got people involved in music because it's so easy.

Ultimate Guitar if you search for a song, most of them now have ukulele chords/tabs up too :) it's much easier for someone with small hands to play ukulele than guitar!
