So tell me what tablet to buy

I am prepared to spend up to £500, including a knock proof case, keyboard, screen protectors.

It is for the whole family. I will mostly use it for internetting/ MN. I have a 5yo and 3yo who will presumably use it for games. DH doesn't bother with technology much at all, so will be occasional internet.

We may both use it for reading on.

The only other technology in the house is my 5yo laptop which is now very slow, and a Galaxy Ace phone, which is crap, and put me off Samsung stuff

My brother has told me I want the Ipad air, and has found me a site which does one for £400, but part of me thinks I am paying for the brand.

Come and tell me what to buy.

I would buy the Samsung galaxy tabs 3 10inch. personally I prefer Samsung can't stand apple products over charging for a picture of fruit rather than a quality product. we have bought 2 of them for our dds Christmases and they are absolutely fantastic. great apps, look fantastic , easy to use.

I have a galaxy note and love it - the pen is really touch sensitive so you can actually draw with it which my 6 year old loves (there is a great animation ap). The ipads are sexier but I think you can do more with an android

We've all got 7inch Samsung Galaxy Tabs here, can download whatever you want onto a micro sd card so mine have movies, music, audio books plus all the usual free apps and games. My boys 8 & 11 (and me) all got them lasy year and they seem pretty hard wearing.

I got an iPad 3 18ish months ago and I love it. I don't care if I paid for the brand, it works really well and has a good screen and is intuitive. I definitely prefer it to DSis's nexus but I am used to iPhones so it felt familiar and I didn't have to learn anything new.

5madthings · 11/11/2013 21:40

Nexus.

Itsjustafleshwound · 11/11/2013 21:42

Ipads are great in that they don't require you to be too tech savvy to get them to work and seem a bit more user friendly.

Yes you do pay for the name, but then you don't need the most up to date model.

Itsjustafleshwound · 11/11/2013 21:46

I might also be shot down in flames, but I read or believe that ipad apps can be cheaper and more variety.

All the Android tablets are much the same now. There isn't much point spending out masses for a name brand. If you're not keen on the iPad (mine is a 2 and had it for over 2 years and it still works as if its brand new) then go for any tab that has at least an android jellybean operating system as this is the best that android has ATM. The one show recommended the tesco hudl as the best family tablet - at £119 you could easily buy two, one for the kids and one for the adults and still have quite a bit of change left over for screen protectors, etc.

RosieBloom32 · 11/11/2013 21:49

Get a Hudl.

Don't be sucked into the Apple branding. Its so locked down its a joke.

Go Android and give yourself choice over which phone and tablet you would like.

Sorry, I should have said that I want 10". Particularly for DD1, as she is probably dyspraxic, so I want things to be easy for her.
