Xmas gifts for 6 month old

Very few of my friends or family know much about babies and they're starting to ask what to get DS for Christmas. I'm clueless and drowning in all the options that there is out there. Can anyone make any recommendations?

Have you thought about asking for toys for when he's a little older than six months?

Or if there is a set of books you want him to have, for example Mr Men or Winnie the Pooh.

Books: I recommend Petr horacek, Leslie patricelli and Janet and Allan Ahlberg.

A fabric frieze to go round the edge of the cot

Gifts for when he's a bit older would be wise, but I think some people will want to give things he can enjoy straight away.

My little boy will be four months.. Try elc toys. We are getting him a mobile that projects onto the wall.

Tummy time toys.

I heard the giraffe thing is brilliant.

What about musical CDs.

My dd was 6 mo in January so similar age last Christmas - we got her quite a lot of "useful" stuff, like bowls, plates, bibs, spoons as we were just about to wean. It also meant we got those nice melamine plates with pics on etc rather than tesco value for her.

Clothes for the next size up always popular here, those nice "That's not my..." books, building blocks, a soft ball, a plinky plonky piano toy which was great then but she's really enjoying it now so that has lasted well.

We will also have a 6 month old for Christmas.
We have suggested one set of grandparents might like to buy him a baby walker, and the other side a set of books. They will also get him bits that they want him to have, but we thought as main gifts that we would ask for something "useful" for him that we would probably get him ourself anyway were it not Christmas.

Thanks for these. Had a bit of a google and the telegraph has a guide suggesting the fifty children's books to build a library. Some are a bit grown up but I think we'll make a start on that.

We have the 'that's not my' books already, they're lovely.

Big presents - jumperoo is fantastic (and down to £50ish at present), the fisher price animal train is good too, and the book people have a lovely beatrix potter set for £30. If you have space a ball pool (cheap paddling pool and a couple of sets of balls).

Smaller things - bath toys, stacking cups, wooden blocks, musical instruments (like bells and shakers), soft toys, plastic farm animals (chunkier baby safe ones) or chunkier cars they can chase along the floor. Board books (especially touchy ones or ones with flaps). Balls to roll along the ground.

DS had a vtech baby walker that he loved and started cruising around on it at 10 months old, he's almost two years old and still loves to push it round!

I'd also suggest some wooden jigsaw puzzles, stacking cups, stacking rings, wooden building bricks, musical toys if you don't already have them.

I'd also recommend Dear Zoo (or anything by Rod Campbell) & Spot the Dog books for under 1's as well as the "That's My" series.

Vtech my pal scout was a present for then 4mo ds a couple Christmases back - and we still use it for bedtime music now. We never have gotten around to personalising it beyond his name though...

Agree with Dear Zoo books, also cloth books were a favourite (John Lewis have a niece selection in the baby dept). Classics like stacking cups and rings are still played with two years on, and anything by Lamaze is lovely for immediate playing.

For bigger presents, how about a lovely toybox? You'll need all the storage you can get in years to come! :)
