Hi,

Elf of the shelf fans?? We have never done this before but I would love to start it as wee family tradition :-)

Things I need want to buy (cheaply!)

  • Elf
  • DVD to explain
  • Book to excite
  • advent calendar
  • Christmas duvet / pjs

Does this sound feasible?

Would this DVD cut it elf dvd or is there a particular "elf on the shelf" DVD?

Can anyone link to an Elf-y book?

Many thanks, off to make a cuppa and read through the bargain threads :-)

We have a de-sexed ragdoll as an elf. He arrives in a shoe box with advent calendars and his passport and a letter of introduction. He is also going to leave The Night Before Christmas book for my two at some stage. We do elf on the cheap.

We bought an elf from www.theelfcompany.com. He came in a sack (which can also be used as a backpack, my son loves carrying him around!) and there is a letter from Father Christmas in the sack with him thanking us for looking after him! The tag has a rhyme explaining the tradition inside so we read that on the day he arrives. Normally I have him bring the advent calendar and he magically changes the duvet covers for Christmas ones the week before Christmas!! On The Elf Company website there is a free elf diary you can download. They're not the cheapest elves around but you don't need to buy anything else to accompany them really as they provide the explanation of the story, the arrival letter and the rucksack has been a real hit with my two! I think on the whole it was probably cheaper buying from them than buying everything separately. I'm having to buy a second one this year so my two don't fight over him! x

I am thinking of doing a variation of elf on the shelf, found a big stuffed cuddly xmas elf in a charity shop the other day, it is about the size of a 1 year old! The kids already think that elves watch them through the windows etc to see if they are being good, so I was thinking of taking pictures of it in various poses (peeking in the window, raiding the fridge, climbing the Xmas tree etc) and saying we had caught the elf. Would only do it every few days as opposed to every day.
Do you think this would work? Don't want to do the whole shebang as we do lots of other stuff in lead up to Xmas plus don't really want to spend loads on the elf, DVD etc etc

An Elf's Story DVD was £2.99 on Amazon the other day b

I don't bother with most of that, elf arrives with advent calendars on Dec 1st with a letter I copy off the internet and print out saying Hi X and Y our names are A and B and Father Christmas sent us to help you all get ready for Christmas before we need to leave to do our deliveries etc etc.

Most nights they get up to something funny and every now and again they might bring a peppa pig xmas dvd or a primark xmas bath sponge or a bag of choc coins and on Dec 21st they will bring a letter saying Father Christmas needs their help in Lapland UK making some toys for the children and on the 22nd we go to Windsor for the day out. Then they pop off on the night of the 23rd leaving a note saying they are helping FC with the deliveries and thank you for being such fun hosts.

Every now and again if things are getting crazy I might ask the kids if they think the elves have a way of updating FC on the naughty and nice list and do they think their behaviour would change the list they are on.
