I have just bought my 8yo DD a mini-Kobo e-reader for Christmas - was on sale at Argos, for 29.99 I think. I don't know what the quality is like but I thought I'd see how she gets on with it and if it's a hit I might get her something better in the future. I didn't want a tablet though as she would spend all her time on apps, so I like the fact that this is just an e-reader.

How about a Kurio? I saw this on show at the Gadget Show Live last weekend and it is designed for children and comes in three sizes. One of the strong points was that it had good parental control. Looks really good, and I would be considering it if my children were younger.

The best thing about Kobo is that you can borrow library books for it, unlike the Kindle. Our library (Wiltshire) lets you have up to five for up to 21 days, and had loads of children's books available last time I looked.
