my 7 year old wants weights.. the lightest iv found is 0.05kg... (for £1.59 as a amzon add on) would this be safe?

i have no idea, obvi i dont want him to injur him self but at the moment he is using his 4 year old brother to lift and put down or packs of flour. i thought really light dunbess would be safer?

if I'm correct weightlifting as a sport is not recommended under the age of 12 or even more as it puts too much strain on the body and can stunt growth (as in height)

but dumbells should be safe, I have a set of 1, 2 & 3 kg weights for me, the kids muck about with the 1kg weights - but it's not a regular thing.

I think 1 kg weights are probably enough if he wants to do stuff like lifting above head or bicep curls - that sort of stuff

ZingWantsCake · 04/11/2013 08:35

and I'm sure you meant 0.5kg!

0.05 kg is 50 gramms (about 2oz) so half the weight of a pot of yogurt - yes, that's definitely safe!Grin Grin

lol yes i meant 0.5kg... which is half a big bag of suger come to think of it isnt it?

its mainly for bicep curl and i very much doubt it'll be every day just s omething he can do when he fancies getting muscles and a bit of fun. there so cheap i dont mind doing it for the "wow i got dunbells and now only going to touch them every other month factor"

I think you would be safer buying proper dumbells that you know the weight of, rather than him trying to weightlift unsuitable things IYSWIM?

BobaFetaCheese · 04/11/2013 11:27

Is there a reason he wants to start weight training so young; do you or someone else lift (as in, is there someone who can show him proper form)? Is he getting bullied...or does he just want to give you a ticket to the gun show for Christmas Grin

This menshealth article is interesting & this bodybuilding guide has a 7 year old guinea pig has a decent workout plan.

I've found the myprotein shop forum is full of knowledgeable and helpful people if you want any proper info on it!

.5kg-1kg should be fine, and probably less likely to protest than your 4 yr old.

oh, and if he is getting proud of his muscles make him carry the washing upstairs, you know, as "cross-training"! Grin

lol. no one we know does weight lifting.. but he does rugby on sundays and enjoys working out.. he will make up his own little gym work out. like jumping jacks, skipping, running ..its not every and not even every week, but it is something he likes doing every so often.

boba yesterday he told me he wanted to muscles to impress his girlfriend at school.. butt shh i was sworn to secrecy on that Grin
thank you for the link, i wil make sure both i and he knows how to do it correctly.

crotch i think your right.. he would prob casue more damge to himself.. and his little brother , .though ds2 doesnt really mind and finds it funny lol.

i shall order them this week, i think he'll be chuffed with them :)
