Xbox live...is 7yrs too young?

My DS 7yrs is constantly asking for Xbox live for Christmas. I don't know much about it and not sure what to do. I know they can play online with others and play different games etc. is it safe? Is there a function that he can play online with others but not talk to anyone? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

X box live means access to other stuff..not just chat. It's worth having.

You can play with others without speaking because you need a head set to do that or kinnect if you want to hear what's being said.

As with most things.. its safe under parental watching.

If you get it though.. get a pre paid card. Do not hook a credit/debit card up to the account.

Thanks gamer

He has the kinect with it, I'm just worried he could talk to a stranger. Is there a turn off function with the kinect?

The Xbox is in the living room so we would always be near when he's on it but would rather be safe than sorry.

Amazon have a live card for about £33 and that's for 12 months...is that a good deal?

my ds 7 uses xbox live. you can play without headphones so he won't be able to speak to other people. I only let the dc play in sitting room with me there and they only speak to their cousin's over the headset.

Thanks hash

Another basic question but how do you link it up with family who have also got it?

There is a social menu on the xbox. You add their username called a "gamer tag" which is just basically sending a friend request, and then the recipient can accept or decline it.
