8 and nearly 11 year old too old for scooters?

We were planning on getting all 3 children a scooter for Christmas, thought it would be nice to all have the same (similar) and could imagine them using them when we're at the park etc. DP has just checked with my DSD's mum (the older two) if they already have them and she replied that they outgrew them years ago Sad.

Should we scrap this idea then?

DS1 is nine and bought one of these with money saved up from Christmas, birthdays, car-boot-saling and a hefty loan from me. It is fab. I want it.

DS is nearly 10 and will be getting a stunt scooter for his birthday. DD is 8 and has a micro scooter which I don't see her suddenly not using any more.

I'm sure they aren't too old for stunt scooters. Definitely not the 8yo anyway.

Micro scooter is the only way to go. Having said that, my 10 yr old wont scoot anymore - too grown up apparently - but of course it depends on the child!

You can get all sorts of super-duper scooters these days, suitable for children and adults. I would say you're never too old for a scooter! My 9yr old has one and loves it! Maybe she just meant that the ones they had, got too small for them?

I would go for it, if I were you. Sounds like a great idea. Smile

It's all about the stunt scooter this year.

I know a few kids between those ages that are having them for Xmas.

P.S. I would suggest looking on Amazon. Some reasonable stunt scooters there with reviews citing 12yr olds, so your dsc definitely not too old!

How about skateboards? Mine think they are amazingly cool and toysrus do different ramps.

Thanks everyone, hadn't realised the significance or difference of the stunt scooter, so will refine my search to that kind for DSD's. DS will be happy with his little Thomas one Grin.

Hope I can find two now that are at a decent price but do the job, pennies are being very stretched this year.

Perhaps I should get me and DP one too, they look great fun!

its really up to you if you get them the older ones will want to do things like - so make sure you get them really really good helmets and pads as well

I have 12 and 13 year olds who both have 2 scooters each :)

They have large wheeled scooters that go really fast but aren't good for stunt type stuff and also Off road stunt type scooters for taking up forest tracks, they are not really into the skate park type of thing.

They very rarely use bikes anymore preferring to go everywhere by scooter.

They are both well over 9 stone and over 5'7 so are "adult" sized. OH nips round the streets on their scooters from time to time :o

I don't think they're too old for a decent scooter - with fixed handle bars so they can go on a skate ramp. If you are on a really limited budget though, I'd say to think of something else as the really cheapy ones would not be great for those ages(sorry - just speaking from experience - I have ages 13, 10, 7 and 2!). An entry level jd bug or razor would probably be around £50.

They're not too old for them at all. But they would need better quality ones as the cheaper versions aren't suitable for the stunt riding that older kids like to do.

noo its the perect age for them..

aslong as they are proper good scooters.. ones they can attempt stunts on.. if thats what they like? you can also get little ramps made for scooter/skateboard stunts.

DS1 (12) and DS2 (8) both have stunt scooters, so I would look at those. Mad Gear Pro or Razor something. DS1 has had stunt ones for a few years now.

My 8 year old uses hosting scooter all the time and it's lasted years, we got ds2 aged 3 one last year and bought a jd bug for £50 that should last years too

My 13 yo has just sold his stunt scooter and graduated to bmx which he barely ever uses but lots of his friends still scooter regularly and I wish he was still out and about with them at the weekend instead of on his xbox. If you're looking at a basic aluminium scooter then they may be a bit old, but there is a world of extortionate high quality scooters for older kids/adults (yes seriously, adults!)

Thanks all, so glad we can stick to the scooter plan, although modified to stunt scooters! Advice has been a great help.

Before I order them how do these look as entry level scooters for them?

If I open a new account, I can get two scooters for £25 (as they in the sale for £25 each and you get £25 off your first order)

Razor Storm A Scooter

Then if they aren't a big hit we won't have wasted too much money...

Oooh, we have bought a Razor A storm for our 9 YO, he's had a 3-wheeled micro scooter 'til now.

He is the most risk-averse child on the planet, so won't be doing stunts. This will be his first 2 wheeled scooter.

Lots of teenagers seem to have them on the school run here, so I'm hoping it will be a good introduction to 2 wheelers. Razor seem to be a good brand, and you can customise them with new wheels/ grips etc. really cheaply.

Skate Hut have loads of bits and pieces for scooters, and seem to be a good company to deal with.

They are fine for scootering about, but are not sturdy enough for skate parks or bumping up and down kerbs or doing bunnyhops etc - the fact that the handlebars adjust height and the scooter folds gives it points of weakness. the stunt scooters have fixed bars and footplates.

They are a recognised make though, so wont be rubbish, it really depends on what you expect them to do with them. The only analogy I can give is that a Fiat 500 car is brilliant for driving about town and getting into small spaces, but if you want to go and herd sheep with it then you'd be better with a land rover, it's horses for courses iyswim?
