Who else is working on Xmas Day?

...and how are you going to incorporate family xmas into working hours? I'm a waitress so xmas day is one of the busiest for us, this is my first year having to work it. I don't start till 12 so will be spending the morning with DH and 3 DC opening presents etc. They are all going to MIL for xmas dinner. I'm off work on xmas eve so would like to try and do some xmassy stuff with kids then.

I'm a nurse so will probably be working. Hopefully will get someone to swap or split the shift with me so I'm at home in the morning but most likely will be working 8-8 with a 40 minute commute so not much time to see kids

Can you not choose a different day to celebrate Christmas? I used to work in TV and there was a live aspect on Christmas Day, I managed to get out of it by agreeing to do new year & Easter but if I couldn't have done that I would have had Christmas Day on Boxing Day or something?

My DM is a nurse. She often had to work on Christmas Day when we were little. We used to celebrate on either Christmas Eve or Boxing Day. It was years before we even realised. As far as we were concerned it was actually Christmas. I do the same thing with my DC birthdays now. They have never once wondered why their birthdays always fall on a Saturday!

We used to only do half shifts over christmas.

Happily have moved areas to one that closes christmas and Boxing Day

Ds is working which means we will be having our Christmas lunch at school. We will have our main celebration on Boxing Day instead.

It's my turn to work Xmas (nurse) hopefully will manage to swap shifts.
I usually offer to do Boxing Day & the whole of New Year.
We are very very short staffed though & people not being replaced. Hmm

Yes I am working ........ You can't work in nursing and not do unsociable hours. We always pick another day when we are together and have Xmas day then :)

Yes me probably but waiting for the rota...(nurse). In a funny way I hope I am, I have been lucky enough not to work it the last couple of years, so I feel bad making any requests as it is my turn really. If I am rostered this year, I will ask for some annual leave next year!

And as others have said, celebrate another day. The only issue is pils...mil takes it as a personal affront if I have to work.

Dp works every year on Christmas Day as he is a chef .

He will be doing the 6am-1pm shift & then come home for Dinner and to wash up & then back in at 3.30 til god knows when as it falls on a Wednesday & he usually does the night shift that day Sad

I haven't spent one Christmas with him in since we got together 8 years ago Angry

My dad worked in a hospital in maintenance so worked every Christmas Day. We opened presents on Christmas eve and waited to have dinner late on Christmas Day.

I actually love the traditional Christmas Eve and have kept it on despite there being no need!

Me, and not happy as its not my turn. My boss let the guy who should have been working instead of me book leave. Annoyed with both of them, him for not playing fair like everyone else does and her for letting him. Hoping my husband will get a shift too so at least we are both at work.

DH used to work on Christmas Day - the DC opened stockings whilst he was at work, then main presents once he came home, we had a buffet type tea and Christmas dinner on Boxing day.

SIL (nurse) used to work and her DH cooked dinner for her and their outlaws (no children) for when she got home from work.

I have to arrange cover for Christmas (for those asking for leave) and I know one of my colleagues and his partner are both down to work Christmas and New Year (He's got leave for NYE, but his partner hasn't).

Also, I have been doing shift work for 20 years, I've had 3 Christmas days off in those 20 years. When I was single I used to swap with colleagues who had families and work their shift for them. I guess im pissed off at the unfairness now.

Purple, feel for you. I have worked in unfair places too. Thankfully current manager and team are brilliant.

unknown rebel, I might do a buffet tea like you mentione, on Christmas Day. Last time I worked I tried to do a proper dinner when I got home at 5, but I was too rushed and stressed. m&s buffet may be the way forward :)

I'm a nurse do 12.5 hour nightshifts doing Xmas eve so will hopefully be home in time to see ds open presents, lucky this year though did xmas eve Xmas day and boxing day last year

I've never had Christmas day with my husband. Next year I am hoping he will get leave and we can go away.

I'm working on 1st Jan too but new year doesnt bother me at all. We never do anything special anyway. As I work in a hotel i'll be taking home heaps of spare food at the end of the day on xmas day so will have a 2nd xmas dinner on boxing day.

I have to say too, i once spent xmas in children's hospital with my daughter. Hats off to you nurses working, they made it such a special time for us.

I really really hope I'm not. I've offered to do Boxing Day, anything over New year and anything inbetween. I'll just have to wait till the off duty is done to see if my pleading has paid off. I'm a nurse too.

My son was in hospital over xmas & NY and the medical staff were brilliant in making the whole experience bearable for the families. Thank you to the health workers who give up their own holidays to work.

Ill be working a 12.5hr shift this Xmas
Day and it's my dds first Xmas (9 months). I know she has no idea what it's all about and will have no idea if it's changed to Boxing Day, just the thought of her and my dh spending Xmas day with the in laws, without me, still celebrating is not nice. Only plus side is I get next Christmas Day off when she'll be that bit older. Oh and I get to (hopefully) deliver a Xmas day baby. I just tell myself that it must be worse being a woman in labour on Xmas day than having to work it!
