Can I do anything with loads of chestnuts?

Went for a walk earlier and discovered loads of chestnuts all over the ground. Is there anything I could do with them? I don't have an open fire for roasting! Do have a log burner but it's inset into the wall so no top.

are they the safe kind to eat, my Mum picked some up once and they found out after eating them they were the poisonous kind!!!

You can roast them in the oven. Make a vertical cut with s sharp knife along the flat side, spread them on a baking tray, sprinkle with coarse salt and bake at 200 C, for around 20 mins (check one before taking them out)

They're also yummy boiled in salted water with some fennel seeds. But for that you need to make the cut as above and cut out the round bit at the bottom, otherwise they'll be too hard to peel.

I didn't know there were different types! How can I tell if they're safe?

Just googled pictures and it looks like I've got the poisonous kind. Not going to risk it but thanks for the ideas!
