14 year old wants an iPad. Too expensive! What's the best tablet that's not an iPad. Must admit, love my iPad, wouldn't have anything else!

Nearly 12 year old lad wanted an iPhone. Ha ha ha. He would like a phone that he can play games in, access the Internet. But he doesn't need anything too high tech.

I would like recommendations if possible.

Thank you.

I would get a Hudl tablet.

Not sure about the phone. I love my Samsung S3 but think that's too much for a 12yo.

wonderingsoul · 18/10/2013 10:09

samsung tab or the hudle

phone wise i agree s3 is crazy for a 12 year old.. but samsung ace or y.. are still very good. you can play games on and look smart to.

WireCat · 18/10/2013 10:10

Thank you both.

Will look into those.

Is the hudl owned by Tesco?

yeah it is. i had a play on it the other day as my parents are thinking about getting it for my ds2 whos 4 almost 5. its very good, imo of course lol

my ds1 got the samsung tab 2 fof his 7 birthday last year of my parents which is also good, but comparing the 2 i think i prefer the hudle

bundaberg · 18/10/2013 10:18

i would go with the nexus all the way! for phone and tablet

WireCat · 18/10/2013 10:30

I am still confused! With the tablet anyway! Grin

I have seen a Nook hd+ on the John Lewis site.

I don't think I will go with the hudl because of Tesco. Thanks though!

Google Nexus 7 - there are two versions, the 2013 is much better than the 2012. Its £200 everywhere, but if you get it from isme their £30 off voucher works on it.

Confusedbyyou · 18/10/2013 13:04

The nook and the kindle are so locked down though.

The Hudl has full access to Google Play - which I would imagine a 15yr old would want. I certainly would.

Who cares if Tesco knows about your shopping habits? Honestly some people worry about the smallest things.

WireCat · 18/10/2013 14:34

Nothing to do with my shopping habits, I just hate Tesco!

The Hudl tablet is excellent. DH (who is a computer geek and works in IT) has just bought himself one and is very pleased with it indeed.

WireCat · 18/10/2013 14:37

Hmm. I could be swayed, especially at the price! Grin

Ah sorry didn't see you don't want one from Tesco. FWIW I don't usually shop there but had heard about the tablet, we did all the research and it was far better than anything else at a comparable price...

ThreeCacklesLovesCandyApples · 19/10/2013 08:43

I would stick to Samsung, both myself and dh have an s3. dd1&2 have galaxy tab 3 for Christmas there absolutely fantastic definitely worth the money. the software on them is actually better than ipad stuff we found out after much shopping around.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 19/10/2013 08:50

I have a Samsung galaxy ace 2 phone and love it. I rarely use the laptop for internet now.

Dh needs to renew his contract and has is going for a deal with carphone warehouse for a galaxy ace, galaxy tab 2 and a samsung camera for £22 p/m. I can't remember the phone package but I remember him saying it was more than enough for him. Depends whether they'll let you cap it mind I guess with a 12 year old!

fanoftheinvisibleman · 19/10/2013 08:52

Although thinking on that was a 2 year contract so probably a bit expensive for a child.

derektheladyhamster · 19/10/2013 08:55

We've just got the nook hd - it's great and not tied into anything. You can access the play store. My 10 yr old loves it, we don't use it as an e reader as such, although it does have the kindle app on it.

I've also bought [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-MeMo-ME172V-7-inch-Tablet/dp/B00C4QWA7Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382169254&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+memo+pad+hd+7 this]] for my 13 yr old.

Do not buy the samsung pocket neo phone, I have it and it's pretty unresponsive with regards to texting, but I don't use it for games

derektheladyhamster · 19/10/2013 08:56

asus tablet

Oldandcobwebby · 19/10/2013 08:56

Nexus all the way. Nexus 7 as a tablet and in a week or so, the new Nexus 5 smartphone. The pure Android experience is so much better than having all the bloatware that Samsung etc have. The Kindle Fire is truly awful.

Confusedbyyou · 19/10/2013 09:49

You can ignore all the Samsung crap though by going through Google Play.

WireCat · 19/10/2013 14:16

Thank you all. Much appreciated.
