What are your 5 yo girls getting?

DD will be 5.3 and hasn't really made any noises about what she wants for Christmas. A remote control unicorn was mentioned...not sure if that is an actual toy?

So far I have got her:
Pretend play school set
Fancy princess dress-up dress and play shoes
pop to the shops boardgame

Was thinking of maybe a smallish Lego Friends set like the cafe or camper van (she has some generic lego which she likes but still finds a bit fiddly).

She has a good imagination but not particularly into small world play (yet?)

Further suggestions gratefully received :)

We will be seeing extended family and she will be spoiled with 'big' gifts probably such as innotab, build a bear trip etc...

Have DD5 and DD6, house full of lego and playmobil so am making them a craft set (supposed to be a small thing but have spent a fortune in The Range and Hobby Craft), Hama Beads, Monster High dolls, new scooters, sticker books etc

I think go for less as they use last years presents for a marker for how much to expect when writing their christmas presents list when they get older! Especially consider this if she is going to be treated by other family members - it can all get a bit overwhelming. What about useful things like a lovely duvet set, framed piccies, cool girlie biscuit cutters and rolling pins to do biscuit making?

If she finds lego tricky there are some really cute disney princess duplo sets on offer or this looks cute www.tesco.com/direct/abrick-horse-club-playset/487-5270.prd?recommendationId=dd3bbfc6-4e39-4d0d-ba47-2b73f7a881fb.0&skuId=487-5270.

My girls nearly 3 and 6 have both loved wooden cake sets like these cake

I wouldn't get a 5 year old Duplo.
My daughter will get a Lego Creator Set, a bicycle and (as joint present with her little sister) a puppet threatre.

Other recommendations would be board games (e.g. Carcassonne for Children is quite good, doesn't have batteries or other annoying features but is interesting enough for adults to play too)

Magic set
Science set
Play post office
Sylvanian families
Scooter
Puppet theatre and puppets
Imaginext toys

(This isn't a list of what one 5 year old is getting for Christmas, more a list of popular toys among the 5/6 year olds I know)

Widow I havent seen the princess duplo in rl, it prob is too chunky. My 6 yo got frustrated with lego friends last year and I can imgine getting disney duplo for my 3 year old and the 6 year old wanting to play with it! I have ordered the lego friends cafe for my 6 yo this year though.

Camera, books, dvds, craft set ..

WidowWadman · 17/10/2013 20:23

giraffe - I guess if my daughter had got frustrated, I might feel differently too - she turned 4 last December and got a Lego City set (which she had been asking for for months) for Christmas - she only needed little help with interpreting the instructions. My 2 year old happily plays with both Duplo and proper Lego. My older daughter still joins in with the Duplo, but overall it's too chunky to build interesting things.

In general I shudder at pink princessy things and therefore have steered her away from Friends and princessy Lego.

Guess children have different levels of fine motor skills, my then 7 year old ds had major trouble with a large ninjago set last year and it led to tears because his friends can make the sets without help. He has asked for small lego sets this year Grin

Doitnicelyplease · 18/10/2013 01:05

Thanks all - some good suggestions there :)

I think I will probably go with the Lego Friends set and maybe add a craft kit too - I remember she got a Gelarti set (make your own sticker thing) for her birthday and loved it.

That should be plenty (also getting knickknack/craft stocking stuff and playmobil advent calendar).

I am avoiding all playmobil, sylvanians, barbies, polly pocket et al - until she requests them (got some great playmobil sets last year and they have been ignored). Lego is a good choice as she does like construction toys.

Dd has asked and asked and asked and asked for Doc McStuffins and Monster High, but no real specifics.

So we are getting her a Doc McStuffins doctors set and a couple of Monster High dolls and the car. I've also got her a marble run, ready bed, couple of craft sets along with some other bits.
