Shall I buy a Nintendo 2DS for DS age 7? Please help me decide! :)

He's not really asking for anything and seems to have everything he needs!

He does enjoy gaming and wondering if we should update his dsi to 2DS?

Anyone have one? What's it like? Can it browse the Internet?

It's had mixed reviews and really not sure what to do.

I haven't looked into the 2ds, but my understanding is that it was a cheaper version of the 3 ds aimed at younger children. So I think that it won't be any gain on what he has.

Have you thought about a Wii, or a pspvita or maybe a tablet?

I think that they are more likely to get damaged as they dont have the fold up design. That would influence whether or not Id get one for a younger child tbh.

We have just brought one for our ds's 5th birthday. He is technology mad and would sit on the iPad all day (if I let him :)), he also is Mario mad and I did not want the 3ds but also feel he is too young for a wi or xbox, that and the fact that they are really expensive. The 2ds looks nice not as big a screen as I was expecting, I do think if my ds were 7 I would want a little more, if you get what I mean.

id get a 3ds ... better games available.

Dd has a dsi and a 3ds. We got her the 3ds as a lot of games now were only playable on the 3ds, the new animal crossing one, the new pokemon one.

The 2ds plays all the games the 3ds does. The 3d function on the 3ds is horrible and dd plays it with the 3d turned off as it makes her feel sick. So essentially she has a 2ds. If 2ds had been available six months ago I'd have got one.

So yes I'd get a 2ds, there will be more and more games which won't play on the dsi.

Didnt realise it didnt fold, get a 3ds then. A non folding portsble game console with a 7yo is asking for trouble IMO.

Get the 3DS. You can always turn off the 3d function in parental controls if you don't want him using that just yet.

Agree with the 3DS, just turn the 3D function off first (I doubt DS's has ever been on more than 20 minutes :o)

3ds is definitely better. You can play both lots of games and turn the 3d off.

I would also recommend the holder thing with extra buttons on it. It gives it extra protection from dropping. Best 8 quid I ever spent.

The 2ds is fantastic, its both forwards and backwards compatable - why pay out the nose for the 3ds when you're going to turn off the 3d mode? You can play DS and 3DS games on the 2ds, fantastic and only a fraction of the price (currently selling in Game for the same price as a preowned 3ds btw)

FWIW my DD was 6 when we got her a DS and she sat on and snapped the console at the hinge she got a preowned replacement but should hers break/die we'll definately be replacing with a 2ds

I should also say it was an accident bloody family members getting her all worked up and telling her to bounce on sofa when she sat on her ds she is not a demon child

I am really not sure what to do. He can't see in 3D so there is really no point in getting him the 3 DS! He does have a dsi, xbox and an Ipad...so maybe I would be wasting my money...but he's just not asking for anything. He's only allowed 1hr per day on the weekends for his gaming! I'm very strict like that!

just wait until they are teenagers, then the struggle really begins when you have been generous when they were younger!

does he have Kinect for the xbox? My boys were really into lego at that age so presents were not really too much of an issue - the lego club magazine used to pretty much sort out our Christmas list :)

What about the new skylanders thing whith the swapping heads?

He has a kinect, hexbug never plays with them stunt scooter and goals. Maybe a go kart but he has a four wheeler to help get the sheep, cows in etc so I really don't think he would get much wear out of it...also we only have a bit of concrete, would a go kart be any good on farm land?

Lego is a brill idea BUT he has sooo many, he builds them and puts them display...doesn't replay with them and I feel it's a waste of money then! He also has a box full of lego that builds and creates with.

Ooh if you are on farm land, then a dirt scooter would be the thing, you can go over rough land with them - my boys are 13 and 12 and have these:

They are quite heavy for doing tricks etc but they can happily take them on mountain bike tracks and would be suitable for younger kids as long as they aren't too puny :o

You can get Go Karts that are better than others for rough ground - maybe something like this:

Don't have much experience of these as unfortunately my boys were really really tall and therefore wouldn't fit in anything other than the really expensive massive go-karts and we had neither the money or the space to store it. We also have a busy street of kids so couldn't really police it's use and it would end up getting damaged etc. with 20 kids hanging all over it :)
