Saw a new Tesco one called "hudl", if you want to go for a less costly version. It is£119, I think. Had a play on it while doing the weekly shop. Seemed good and actually perfect for a child.

And why would anyone judge you? Confused

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 04/10/2013 09:07

just cos it is quite an extravagant gift for a child (and I am reeling at the cost)

If you have tesco club card vouchers then you can effectively buy it for half price at the mo. I don't know how good it is, but at £60 in vouchers, it seems like a bargain.

I got the Nexus 7 last year for my DS and DD - it came with lots of recommendations. They have both lasted well, and are played with loads.

I bought them from Currys i think, and there was an offer on last December.

My DD is only 9 and she gets great use out of it.

She would have preferred an ipad or ipad mini - but its out of our price range

HerrenaHarridan · 04/10/2013 14:13

No judging here Smile

I am currently saving for a refurbished iPad for my 2yo birthday

The touchscreens and simplistic app designs are great for tiny tots to be able to work them.
She's growing up in a world of technology and I want her to be confident using it

I've just book the nook hd for my 10 yr old. They start at £79 nook hd

ilovepowerhoop · 04/10/2013 14:19

both mine got the samsung galaxy tablets last christmas (when they were age 6 and 9)

hoppingmad · 04/10/2013 14:23

I got my 8 yr old one last Christmas! It's just an 8" joypad I bought off groupon in the run up to Christmas last year. Think it was about £55 and they had sent me a voucher for £5 off my next purchase so ended up quite reasonable.

It's still going strong, she downloads free apps and does lots of different things on it. Can research things for school topics etc.

I think it's a great gift as they have new games on tap and plenty of free ones to choose from so better value then £30+ for ds games or the like

I'm not judging, we're getting dd1 who's 6 a tablet for Christmas (we already have an iPad they both use all the time, but I'm sick of the arguing over it) we were thinking of a Kindle fire but think we may now go for the new Tesco one. Plus you can apparantly use your club card points to pay and Tesco will double the points u already have, so that could be quite a good saving

Lizzylou · 04/10/2013 16:56

Our 2 (9 & 7) have the Samsung Galaxys. They're great.

JakeBullet · 04/10/2013 17:04

The Teaco Hudl has had a good write up and looks very drop proof too. You can apparently buy it with £60 worth of Clubcard vouchers when offers are on as well.

jezzasjockstrap · 04/10/2013 17:13

Carphone warehouse have Nexus 7 old stock for £139. Only in brown though.

Loolah · 04/10/2013 19:54

Got my Dd a tablet from eBay, new very basic she plays games, watches films and looks at YouTube. It cost about £40 it's pretty good for the price as I didn't want to get an expensive one until I was sure she would look after it

ScornedWoman · 05/10/2013 09:23

I'm thinking of buying a nook. The 8gb one is only £79. DS1 says that's not enough memory/storage though. Reviews are generally positive. Does anyone have a nook?

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmmmmmm · 06/10/2013 17:52

Nook HD and Nook HD+ will both take an sd card, to increase storage up to an additional 32gb. If he needs more than that, you seriously need to know what he's downloading.Wink

hifi · 06/10/2013 18:13

iPad mini, anything else I think they will be disappointed

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 06/10/2013 18:19

that is what I was wondering HiFi, we have a family iPad so it is the comparison that I was thinking about weighed up against it being his.

I tried to get the one from Tesco but it sold out in 2 hours, so I got one from ToysRUS £99.99 down from £149.

I got DS2 a cheaper one from Amazon for £50

The Samsung Galaxy is every bit as good as an Ipad Mini, and half the price. We read all the reviews first before buying them.
Meant we could get them one each instead of a shared Ipad. Which would have created mayhem.

My dad just bought this. It is £49.98 and he says it is very good :)

Lizzylou · 06/10/2013 18:57

Moldibg, your dd will be thrilled, bet you anything Smile

emlu67 · 06/10/2013 20:33

DS (6) teacher who is in charge of IT for the whole school asked his class how many had an Ipad/Ipad mini. DS upset as only two of them didn't have one and he hates to be left out. Now wants one for Christmas but my budget doesn't run to that. Watching this thread with interest, no thanks to teacher!

ilovepowerhoop · 06/10/2013 20:47

I dont even have an Ipad! (kids have samsung galaxy tablets)
