Are there any safe sites to get them from other than dvla?

Ive bought from regtransfers.co.uk

Had to ask to be removed from the mailing list though cos kept getting a magazine. Otherwise all ok.

I would try the DVLA first for the one you want, as other companies charge a premium on top. I know someone that has one and it cost her half the amount doing it this way. Some companies will say they have the one you are looking for but they only really check its available and they buy it and sell it on to you.

Are you sure the person wants one? I'd hate it and it costs money to transfer it every time you change your car.

Oreocrumbs · 18/09/2013 21:48

We used regtransfers too.

I got a sort of personailsed number when I bought a new car a few years back (my two initials + an X )

They are a bit naff IMO.
I wouldn't have paid for it, just on the available plates.

Squirted/oro - is the price you see, the price you pay

You will have to pay the transfer fee (which you will also have to pay every time you change car) The last time I paid that it was around £80 but that was a couple of years ago so may have gone up a little bit.

Other than that, check if it includes VAT (some do some don't - depends on how they are being sold I think).

It was about 10 years ago when I bought the plate so I might be misremembering, but this is how I remember it!

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 19/09/2013 13:45

I cant really remember tbh. There is some sort of fee involved from the DVLNI (your DVLA), but I'm in NI and the whole process is different. They sorted it all out though.

I have one and love it!! It's also gone up in value since I had it 14 years ago. I bought mine from the 'autocar' magazine and we do pay about £80 very time we change the car, which I don't mind.

It will be a great gift for someone.

Oldraver · 21/09/2013 14:11

My plate is now worth more than the car Blush

way2serious · 21/09/2013 14:14

We have bought through DVLA. All went very smoothly. It is a bit of a palaver when changing cars but we dont do it that often.
