Advice / info needed on minecraft , didicars, go carty things with no pedals and tablets.

Ds is 7 at Christmas and dd is 3 soon. Ds has never mentioned minecraft but since he has his birthday and Christmas together and therefore will have a whole year to wait I'm wondering if I should try and gauge his interest now - thing is I don't actually understand it??

Have been thinking of getting dd a didicar - any experience? Also been thinking of getting ds one of these weird go kartish things anyone had one? Would you recommend it? If not anything else you would?

My mum wants to get them a tablet each which I'm not 100% convinced on but I have no idea at all about tablets or what I'd be looking for in one for a 7 or 3 year old. Can anyone help? I've never even used an iPad! Don't want her spending too much as they might not use it.

Ps they have bikes and scooters and an old fashioned trike already but they do spend a lot of time outside so another thing wouldn't go amiss.

Dh thinks a Google nexus or a Kindle Fire for 6yo dd1.

I'm not much help as I don't know why he thinks this.

My kids (9and 8) have kindle fires and they have been great and get used a lot. You can then load the minecraft game on to it. Or if you have an xbox you can buy minecraft the game for it.

Didicars are fantastic both ds have had them for at least 3 years and they still play on them all the time. Ds2 nursery used to have them too and they were always the most wanted toy.

Kindle fire is indeed a tablet

With apps, games, books etc.

Its also only £99 atm.

Thanks am off to have a look. Do you think it'd be too complex for a 3 year old though? I thought about getting her an innotab but I am totally clueless.

I wouldn't bother with a tablet for a 3yo.

Innotab would be much better I would have thought.

I think the 3yo would work out how to use the tablet fairly quickly, but your main issue is going to be that a 3yo is going to be a bit clumsy or heavy handed, even if they are trying to take good care of something. An Innotab is harder wearing that a Kindle/nexus, because it's been built for use by small children, the others haven't.

Having said that, the Kindle or nexus would be my choice, because the choice of games and other content is far better, and far cheaper than on the Innotab.

If your mum is set on buying them, then I would invest in decent cases for them as well, there's loads of choice, and they will offer some protection against being dropped.

Oh, and there's a free version of Minecraft for the tablets, so if he shows an interest he can start out with that. The full tablet version is £5-ish, which is not the same as the pc/xbox version, because it doesn't allow you to join multiplayer games, but is probably safer for a 7yo.

If you do let them have tablets, make sure that you read up on how to set them up safely, and in a way that the children cannot 'accidentally' spend several hundred pounds on smurf berries or pony jewels. It isn't difficult, really, there's a couple of decent guides on the BBC website and on the Telegraph.

We've got a didicar and its great. I think we got it when dd was 2. She's 10 in a month and she was on it today. Grin

I have 4 ds so we have had a lot of go cart type things over the years! Without doubt the best one we have ever bought was this absolutely brilliant. The castors turn 360 degrees and they can go any direction in it. Every child that comes to visit loves it too. I have seen it at £75 at Smyths at one stage so it's worth shopping about.
Minecraft is a pretty harmless but addictive game. It is basically building a virtual world. All of mine love it, (ds are 11, ,9,7 and5). As another poster said its free for tablet. Lego have also brought out Minecraft sets lately which your ds might like. I've got those for mine.

Yes just read some of those. Ours is 2 years old and we havent had any problems with the wheels. But agree that you need a fair bit if space to use it & fly about

We have a lot of space so that's not an issue. I'm going to see if there's anywhere we could hve a look at one before buying.....
