Hah Grin planning wine already even though I've not bought a single pressie Smile

What's the one everyone was talking about on here last year - I think it was a waitrose one that lots of people said was a great alternative to champagne.

I'm not a big wine drinker, prefer a rum but I can't resist the M&S Pinot Grigio blush. It's light and pink and fizzy and under £5 a bottle. Always get a few in at Christmas.

BaconAndAvocado · 03/09/2013 22:49

This year will be the year that I finally make Nigella's "Christmas in a glass".

Very simple, prosecco/cava mixed with Monin gingerbread syrup. I've never tried it, it just sounds very very swish and "Nigella".

Also want to do her fir tree vanilla cake thing too, although the cake tin costs £25.......maybe I'll stick to the booze Smile

timidviper · 03/09/2013 23:12

We like Brancott Estate Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc from Morrisons for a cheaper fizz than champagne.

A nice fizzy cocktail for Xmas is cointreau, pomegranate juice and sparkling wine. It is quite lethal though as it tastes like pop!

CiderwithBuda · 03/09/2013 23:19

I have already stashed away a bottle of Veuve Cliquot - 25% off in Sainsburys a few weeks ago. Still expensive but I'm the only one who drinks it. If mil is here she will have half a glass but the rest of the bottle is all mine! And my Xmas treat is drinking it throughout the day. Thank god DH does dinner!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/09/2013 00:32

Bacon can the fir tree vanilla cake be done in a bundt tin?
Then you could decorate like a holly wreath.

Is there a recipe online?
(Saw it on the TV show where her 'friends' came round for Post Hangover coffee and brunch)

BankerMommy2010 · 04/09/2013 10:57

I love a glass of wine, but not sure how people manage to drink a whole champagne & not conk out before Christmas dinner? Alcohol... especially champ makes me sleepy.

craftynclothy · 04/09/2013 11:40

We always go for the cheap option get a bottle of Kir Royal from M&S. Actually we often get two as we tend to buy it when it's on offer. This year I plan on putting one in the Xmas eve hamper and the other will be for Xmas morning.

Then we either have a bottle of wine with Xmas dinner or Dh has a pint and I drink tea Blush

chirpchirp · 04/09/2013 12:25

Thanks for the tip bacon have just ordered some gingerbread syrup :)

chirpchirp · 04/09/2013 12:28

I may have also ordered the cinnamon and caramel syrups to experiment with too Blush

HavingAnOffDAy · 04/09/2013 18:25

Thanks for the recommendations but its the Waitrose one I was specifically looking for. I'll have to trawl old threads Confused

But what about an English sparkling? Chapel Down is lush and is my Christmas tipple!

RhondaJean · 04/09/2013 20:12

I obviously drink too much would start with a bottle or two of sainsburys extra special clementine bucks fizz, move onto a bottle of nice prosecco for the afternoon with the in laws, find a good Viognier for dinner and wind the night up with Lanson or Moët for me and DH once everyone is gone or asleep.

Hic.

HavingAnOffDAy · 04/09/2013 20:29

I'm liking your style RhondaJeanSmile

I must drink too much too as one bottle is never enough. And this year my inlaws are with us for Christmas Day which means I'll need extra supplies.

Though I obviously wouldn't keep the nicer stuff for me & give them something cheaper, oh no, not me. Wink

I am by no means a lightweight drinker. Love my wine, but noway could I drink that much though out the day, eat Christmas dinner and still be awake for the eve x

BaconAndAvocado · 04/09/2013 21:19

70 love your idea of a bundt tin/wreath!

Not sure if recipe is online. Nigella's "Christmas" is my most favourite recipe book, from September onwards I cherish it. Actually making any of the food from said book is a slightly different matter.........

doittoojulia Chapel Down sparkling rose is very very lovely. We went for a day out at Chapel Down vineyards in Tenterden and were told that it was the fizz used at Will and Kate's wedding, very spesh Smile

RhondaJean · 04/09/2013 21:21

It's not as much as it sounds.

There's only about 3 units in a bottle of the bucks fizz so even if it was a bottle each, that's worn off by about 10 in the morning! Then a bottle of prosecco t 9 units between 4 is about 2 units each, at about 1 when the inlaws arrive. That's worn offby 3 when you sit down for dinner, and yep a couple of large glasses of wine would mean nice rest aft a large dinner, but then it's going to be about 10 at night before you get sat down with that bottle of champers...

RiojaLover75 · 04/09/2013 21:28

Is it the San Leo Prosecco you're thinking about HavingAnOffDay?
One of our favourites Grin

HavingAnOffDAy · 04/09/2013 21:57

I don't know Rioja, I seem to remember it had a longer name.

I'm actually starting to think I imagined the whole thingSmile

The Sainsburys "Taste the Difference" Prosecco is fantastic. It's about £10 per bottle, but is usually on offer 1/3off, before Christmas proper.

And is very, very good.

OctoberMoon · 06/09/2013 10:57

I love the Sainsbury's taste the difference Clementine bucks fizz. Noticed they had bottles out in their with £1 off yesterday.

I love mulled wine as well, but it doesn't seem to be available yet.

Anyone like egg nog?

BaconAndAvocado · 06/09/2013 22:23

What is Egg Nog? I've heard tell of it on the telly box.

smellylittleorange · 06/09/2013 22:57

We tend to have prosecco as I find it softer (less mouth drying?) then champagne got sent some Chapel down fizz for DH birthday was lush.

I always think the red edible flowers in fizz would look quite christmassy - you could stick some in Lemonade for the kids
