And more importantly are you ok with it?

Dh had "bought" me two presents that I really really want this year. I have been online sourced & ordered them. I am getting two presents I really want that were supposed to be £210 for £97.

I'm happy with the gifts (obviously) but a little childish part of me is sad that I never get surprises. Then again if i did get surprises chances are it would be money wasted.

Does everyone else get surprises or do you see to gifts yourself?

DH surprises me. I've had some shockers years ago but he's improved with age Grin

Last year there was a small rectangular box under the tree. Shaking it revealed nothing. Cue, Christmas morning I opened a box of After Eights.

Or so I thought, no After eights inside, just newspaper concealing a box with diamond earrings in Grin. Put the jumper I'd bought him to shame Blush

marriedandwreathedinholly · 18/12/2012 20:46

Trying to think what I've had over the years.

Some Elizabeth Bradley embroidery kits
A Cashmere Pashmina
A handbag - nice one
Highlights and haircut
Dresssing gown
Big Le Creuset Casserole Xmas Hmm
Picture
Sewing machine
Perfume
Tiffany necklace and matching earrings (that was a good year)

He does need help though and there have been years when he's been rather sheepish and shuffled some money in my direction. He hates shopping and I knew he hated shopping when I married him. I bought the dressing gown and the sewing machine by the way and he gave me the money.

Snigger at glass dildo. What if it breaks? Try explaining that in the ER!

Pagwatch · 18/12/2012 20:48

No. No way. He buys me fucking brilliant presents.
I would never in a million years buy the stuff he buys me. I wouldn't even ask for it.
It's lovely.
He gives it huge thought.

QODRestYeMerryGentlemen · 18/12/2012 20:51

You're a beaver viva, would you like a cold glass dildo in your beaver?

Was one of those "what the actual fuck" moments

clam · 18/12/2012 20:52

I have to admit that I've trained dh over the years. He's bloody good at flowers now, and pretty good at gifts too.

Mind you, this year, I've taken him out shopping and pointed out a number of things I like and left him to it! He was glad of the tips, as he wants to get it right.

Violet77 · 18/12/2012 20:54

Buy my oen :-) he's rubbish and i hate being dissapointed. I buy them very early in the year and wrapped a long time ago, to help with the surprise element!

MistletoeAndVino · 18/12/2012 20:57

For Christmas and birthdays I usually choose something because we don't routinely spend much on ourselves so I usually pick something I need, a new coat or something.

But my DH is very thoughtful and often gets me lovely little things for no reason through the year, maybe just £5 worth or occasionally maybe £30, just when he sees something and wants to treat me. Those spontaneous gifts mean much more than a Christmas gift would so I don't mind never getting a surprise for Christmas.

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 18/12/2012 20:58

Yes, I buy all my own. And it's not because dh is rubbish at gifts but I hate waste.

He will get me a few little stocking things when he goes shopping Saturday but the main gifts I buy myself.

musttidyupBeforeSantaComes · 18/12/2012 21:19

Errrrm a little question about the glass dildo. Is it ornamental? You know little those funny little crystal owl things? If so WTF? And if not WTFF?? Really? Why?

mrscrimbobash · 18/12/2012 21:20

I normally get this but this year there is a package under the tree for me.

I don't care if it is a bar of soap, it's something that i haven't bought myself so i'm delighted.

ginmakesitallok · 18/12/2012 21:23

My DP buys me great presents - always much better than I get him. If you are worried he'll get you someting you won't like can't you just get him to keep the receipt??

twooter · 18/12/2012 21:24

We normally do this, but I'm feeling a bit off about it this year, so may change things for next year. It's just starting to feel a bit 'blah, can't be bothered o think of something special, so get your own'

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 18/12/2012 21:25

I do my own Xmas stocking which is a bit sad but otherwise wouldn't get one

QODRestYeMerryGentlemen · 18/12/2012 21:29

MaryChristmaZEverybody · 18/12/2012 21:31

Me.

And I'm very happy. I will get a pair of boots, a jumper and a couple of books. As well as an ipad stylus and some slippers and a rather lovely bottle of dessert wine.

I will enjoy my presents much more than the expensive jewellery and/or last minute panic buys I might otherwise get.

musttidyupBeforeSantaComes · 18/12/2012 21:32

Gracious. How brave.
Arf at it not being waterproof. Like a window.

ChristmasKnackers · 18/12/2012 21:35

It's hit and miss, but I wouldn't change it. When he gets it right its fantastic and when it's wrong, it's hilarious.

Well that dildo gets good reviews.

MaryChristmaZEverybody · 18/12/2012 21:44

My problem is that, left to his own devices, dh spends too much.

I really don't mind what he gets. But he's likely to spend a couple of hundred quid on something that is quite nice but totally unnecessary. Leaving us very short in January.

Baffledandbewildered · 18/12/2012 21:47

I buy for our 5 children ,my family ,his family ,our friend , for him and our numerous pets !! And yes I still buy some of MINE !! He then gets our daughter to get the rest and she then wraps and tags them :) I also do all the foodie shopping ect so by Boxing Day he can tell me Christmas is exhausting lol

Gilberte · 18/12/2012 21:59

DH and I aren't buying anything for each other this year. We didn't last year either. That's fine with me. I've bought all the family's presents so far so it's one less to think about.

SDTGisAChristmassyWolefGenius · 18/12/2012 22:04

I showed dh the crown derby cat I wanted for my birthday on eBay, and he bought it - then I was in when it was delivered, opened it and checked it, then gave it to dh to pack. And I bought my Christmas present too. Sometimes he uses his own discretion, but that can be a bit hit or miss.

Kirstoll · 18/12/2012 22:06

See when I met my dh, he was a spoilt brat- complete mummy's boy! So when he does something small (e.g today on my birthday, he went to my mums and picked up dd on train, which he HATES, and left me a couple of drinks in local pub and magazine so I could relax after work) so yes I have b ought most Xmas prezzies but he has proved him
Self thoughtful in so many other ways!! Xmas just doesn't come naturally to him. Everyone has their foibles!
