And more importantly are you ok with it?

Dh had "bought" me two presents that I really really want this year. I have been online sourced & ordered them. I am getting two presents I really want that were supposed to be £210 for £97.

I'm happy with the gifts (obviously) but a little childish part of me is sad that I never get surprises. Then again if i did get surprises chances are it would be money wasted.

Does everyone else get surprises or do you see to gifts yourself?

Myself! Exactly like you

HarlettHoHoHoScara · 18/12/2012 19:12

Left to his own devices, DP has bought me a fucking foot spa and a Soda Stream. So, yes, I buy my own and present him with the receipts and no, it doesn't bother me.

DoubleMum · 18/12/2012 19:12

I am resigned to the fact I won't get something I want unless I choose it. I always get a (very) little surprise too.

NewFerry · 18/12/2012 19:14

Me too
DH has tried to buy me a surprise cake stand this year, Xmas Hmm

crazy8 · 18/12/2012 19:15

I had to order my own present from DH yesterday from John Lewis as he couldn't think of anything. He pressed the final couple of buttons on the pc so can say he ordered it. Last week he got annoyed as I hadn't told him what I wanted!!

FlourFace · 18/12/2012 19:16

Once you start, you've signed up for life.

I got my own because I really wanted some boots and am hard to please! He is getting himself some jeans from me for the same reason, however we will both also buy a few surprises for each other, I usually do a stocking for him with treats in.
So don't feel sad, lots of us do what you do OP :)

FromEsme · 18/12/2012 19:21

No way. That's not the point of a present! I would rather go without than buy myself something.

judefawley · 18/12/2012 19:26

No!

Do people really do this? I'd rather have nothing.

My colleague told me her husband is getting her a John Lewis voucher - I thought that was depressing enough.

PoppyWearer · 18/12/2012 19:26

I have bought a few lovely things for DH to give me on Christmas Day. He will look good in front of his Mum and his MIL. I will feign surprise, and get some presents I really want, rather than yet another useless item of jewellery I never wear.

rhondajean · 18/12/2012 19:42

No chance, I'd never accept that lack of effort, vouchers and cash are not acceptable either here.

Adviceinscotland · 18/12/2012 20:06

Oh no! I would never rather go without Blush

I'm getting the boots I have lusted after for ages.

Dh's heart is in the right place and he would happily go out and get things but he never seems to get it right.

We save hard to have a good Xmas budget so it's a bit soul destroying when it gets wasted on stuff i don't like.

For example I showed him the north face jacket I really wanted last year but when he went to buy it he seen a more expensive one and for some reason thought more expensive= better so i ended up with a jacket that was not what I was after.

One of my presents this year is the huge soap and glory set from boots which is £65 reduced to £27. I happened to mention how exited I was about it so dh thought rather than me waiting a whole week that he would go and get the much smaller £35 set to give to me right away! Nice thought but that's £35 down the drain (or it would be if I had not asked him to return it)

DP would usually buy me my own presents. But I've seen so many bargains on mumsnet this year that I've bought my presents for him! I couldn't see the point in DP going & paying full price in the shops when we could my presents cheaper online!

Adviceinscotland · 18/12/2012 20:10

Yes I also got a sodastream one year after some random conversation in the middle of summer when I had mentioned how jealous I was of my cousins sodastream when we were dc.

Que wakening up on Xmas morning at 25 years old to see a huge box which when eagerly opened contained a sodastream Grin

I have bought and love all my presents!
I refuse to wrap them though Xmas Smile

hmc · 18/12/2012 20:16

Yes - I don't mind, I get what I want

ashesgirl · 18/12/2012 20:18

No way. I can't believe how shite some partners are. Can't they get off their arses and buy a present?

Themilkybarisonme · 18/12/2012 20:24

I bought a little stocking present for DH to add to my pile - it was an unusual but cheap scarf in a town we don't go to often. I could have just bought it and used it but I thought the anticipation would add to it :)

bigTillyMincePie · 18/12/2012 20:28

I go one better - DH just gives me money Grin

Marne · 18/12/2012 20:33

I know what dh is getting me, i asked for a new phone so he set a contract up for me (phone was free so he hasn't really bought it) and today i found a diary in Poundland which he will wrap up for me Grin. In a way its easier as it means i get what i want and not some huge tacky earings that i have to say i like, on the other hand it is a bit sad that there are no suprises.

milkymocha · 18/12/2012 20:35

This year my OH is really chuffed with himself after lying to me that he was at work and went with my best friend to buy me a charm bracelet i've been lusting after.
This in itself is an xmas miracle as last year i got a candy floss machine Envy

sadly MIL cant keep a secret

JoInScotland · 18/12/2012 20:37

DP is rubbish at Christmas... while I'm helping our DS make mince pies, Christmas cards and decorate the house, he's moaning about the cost, etc. I don't know how he turned into such a Grinch, and he likes the way the house looks, and likes eating the pies!

So this year, when Lands End were having a sale, I ordered some turtlenecks to put away next year for DS, some hiking boots that were on sale, etc. The boots are for me, but I don't need them until summer, so I wrapped them as if they were for him. I get what I want, won't remember next week and it will feel like a surprise!

DP's family aren't really into holidays, and I always have been, so it may be a slippery slope, but at least I 1) get to open something and 2) get what I want in the right size!

musttidyupBeforeSantaComes · 18/12/2012 20:39

I buy mine too but he says he has a surprise for me this year and apparently I will love it. I bet it's the S&G set and not a pandora charm that I've been dropping hints about bought myself a lovely leather jacket on eBay do he'll give me that too.
I suppose I don't really mind and would rather have something I want BUT there is a part of me that thinks it will be lovely to have something I've not bought myself.

QODRestYeMerryGentlemen · 18/12/2012 20:42

For my birthday my dh bought me a glass dildo.

Therefore, we've reverted back to me seeing something, buying it, him giving it to dd to wrap.
