Not royal icing but the other one where you lay it flat on the Christmas cake? I need to look up a recipe and can't remember what to google.

Anyone got a good fondant recipe. Delia is letting me down. Grrr.

I thought fondant was for making things? Like little snowmen etc? I always leave Marzipan out anyhow Xmas Grin

I've only ever tried making Delia's and it cracked like hell.

I just buy it now. Either the M&S stuff or branded. Supermarket own brands always taste nasty to me.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 18/12/2012 13:22

I normally buy it, but the supermarket had run out and I'm trapped at home til Thursday and bored, so I thought I'd give it a go.
Only recipes seem to ask for glycerine and I haven't got any.

Going to give up and make royal icing. That is easy.

Yes, go with royal. Fondant is a sod to make.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 18/12/2012 17:25

Went with royal. Bastard stuff kept sliding off and now it looks like my cake has melted!

You definitely need glycerine to make fondant (you used to be able to get it from pharmacies, don't know now as haven't bought it for years). Shop bought is pretty good now though and much easier to handle.

DoubleMum · 18/12/2012 17:29

Royal icing to go on a cake rather than be piped should be so stiff a spatula will stand up in it, then it shouldn't (note the shouldn't!) fall off.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 18/12/2012 18:16

next year I will get it right!

Am doing mine tomorrow so I expect that will fall off too, LOL!

Themilkybarisonme · 18/12/2012 20:22

You can buy glycerine in supermarkets these days. But it's always within 3m of the fondant icing, so I just go with that!
