Does anyone know about telescopes? I'm struggling to work out the best option

It's Christmas DHs birthday and our anniversary! He's mentioned a telescope but the reviews are really confusing me. Does anyone know about telescopes who can give me some guidance as to what might be a good buy. I don't want something too cheap which won't show much and then not get used but at the same time I'm not spending thousands!

This is very probably no help at all, but I'm sure I read somewhere that for star gazing, its better to get some good binoculars and a stand. I think the article said you can get better "power" for the same sort of spend.

I don't know much at all about telescopes but I did see this cracking deal in Jessops.

There are other good deals and reviews on the website too.

That's a good discount rightupmyrue. I shall have a closer look, cavey I also read that but he wants a telescope and so I'm not sure binoculars will do.

That Jessops one is what I've just bought DH for Christmas (with his knowledge). As cash is tight, and the one he actually wants is thousands, it's a "lets see how we get on" kind of one. Figured for that price we can't really go far wrong. They also had a c.£250 one down to half price.

There were also some great deals on binoculars, if you read the specs of them it tells you which ones would be good for astronomy.

Good luck!

this is a good starter scope

try posting on stargazers lounge for more detail :)

Astro buy and sell is good for second hand kit under market value.

telescope much better than binoculars for planet viewing and moon.

binoculars good for e.g. ISS viewing.

though you can get a binoviewer to look at planets with two eyes via a scope.

I bought this one for my DH this year for Christmas celestron after doing lots of research.....

ChristmasSpiritEndorphins · 15/12/2012 17:44

All I have heard is to be sure it has optic glass in it.

GrimmaTheNome · 15/12/2012 17:50

Just checking - he does want it for stargazing not birdwatching? They're rather different beasts.

Virgil · 15/12/2012 20:41

It's for stargazing. I've been looking at the celestron ones this afternoon.
