A special Teddy- Anyone seen any cute/quality ones about?

It's my DS2's first christmas and I want to buy him a teddy or soft toy (not christmas themed though).

I want one that will last (quality fabric and not too small) and that he could keep as he grows older if he wished.

Anyone seen anything that could fit the bill?

How about Harrods Xmas bear? The year is embroidered on his foot and the bear changes every year. My DC's have each got one for the year they were born.

BrianButterfield · 14/12/2012 22:22

Well Steiff are the heirloom teddy brand but £££. I like the House of Fraser bears - they do them with the year embroidered on them and they're lovely and cuddly and good quality.

here

tiredteddy · 14/12/2012 22:27

Something from Jellycat range?

Dogsmom · 14/12/2012 22:27

I've bought one from the Charlie Bear range, it arrived today and she's so pretty! They are quite firm bodied proper jointed bears.

Our dd isn't due until March and I wanted one she could keep for life.

They all have names so you could do a search for one with your child name.

Jcee · 14/12/2012 22:30

DD was bought this when she was born and she loves it - she is now 3

Sleepwhenidie · 14/12/2012 22:31

Definitely steiff, they have some very cute animals as well as traditional bears.

Benaberry · 14/12/2012 23:03

We've bought ds2 a Steiff one with the year on its foot for his first Christmas. Think it was about £35 in Hamleys. Hamlets had some other lovely ones too, we had a shortlist of about 5.

Hugo bear in the Little White Company is very cute too, and John Lewis also had some nice ones.

Can you tell I've spent the last few weeks playing "hunt THE teddy?" Ds1 has a gorgeous one from the White Company that he adores, but I was really struggling to find one I liked as much for ds2. Not too cartoony-faced, soft fur, not too hairy, and very, very huggable...

Benaberry · 14/12/2012 23:10

This is the one we've just bought ds2:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0066GADNQ

Definitely wasn't £50 though, sure was about £30/35

joymaker · 14/12/2012 23:14

Love the look of this one and this, on the other I like this one and this one which are also more modestly priced.

And yet I love the idea of the year printed on the foot of the bear. The HoF bear is at bargain price too, decisions decisions...

Thank you all

I was about to suggest the harrods Teddy but xbenedict beat me to it. Dd has one from the year she was born.

joymaker · 14/12/2012 23:24

Funny coincidence Benaberry as that's ds's name Smile I shall now have to have a look. Lol, I can well imagine it taking me longer than I had anticipated too as the facial expression on the bear also has to be right.

I'd always go for Steiff. They're fantastic quality, and really cute. They don;t do only teddies, but all kinds of animals. My daughter is cuddling the Steiff puma I got as a baby 33 years ago as I type.

bruffin · 14/12/2012 23:27

Another vote for Harrods with the year on their foot. My two still have theirs and are 15 and 17

80sMum · 14/12/2012 23:30

How about a Merrythought bear?
They are made in the UK and built to last.

LadyofWinterfell · 14/12/2012 23:30

I Like the Skiffles bear, easy enough to get a second too if it becomes the bear of choice then gets lost! Do you have anyone who could embroider the year on its foot?

joymaker · 14/12/2012 23:32

Like the facial expression on the bear you chose, however dp would have a fit if I spent that much on it

xbenedict and nancy75 the harrods teddy this year just isn't right somehow

I can vouch for the cuddle-ability and expression on the Steiff one we bought (epic link fail upthread as I'm on my phone but google "Steiff 2012 bear" - he's quite similar to the first one you linked to). Hugo v.cute, think he could be a white version of the first Jellycat one you linked to, I think most of their toys are jellycat ones. Ds1 has a huge floppy white lion called Arthur who's absolutely gorgeous.

Hard isn't it?! Dh thought I was mad until we stood in Hamleys with 6 different bears, then he suddenly realised what I meant.

Benaberry · 14/12/2012 23:40

And shop around, especially with the Steiffs and Jellycats - was Shock when I saw the price of our one on that link - even Hamley's (who were trying to sell the Lego advent calendar for £30, £10 more than anyone else we'd seen on 1st Dec) weren't charging that for him

IShallCallYouSquishy · 15/12/2012 20:03

Harrods do a first Christmas bear with 2012 on it. I got one for my DD and he's gorgeous and so soft.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/12/2012 20:22

Costco had some Stieff Bears.
Not sure if they are still in stock.

QVC sell 'Charlie Bears' (www.qvcuk.com)
Most special bears are not suitable for young DC though.

(I traipsed round Glasgow 5 months pg to find 'the' bear for my unborn DS back in 1999. He still has the teddy on his bed. It cost me £2 Shock but it had to have the perfect 'look' on it's face)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/12/2012 20:23

Shock should be Grin

Lilymaid · 15/12/2012 20:24

The Merrythoughts are excellent - both DSs had the small ones and they are still looking good over 20 years on. They all have slightly different expressions so it is great choosing the right one! Expensive but quality!
We've also got Granddad's old Teddy (pre WWI Stieff) but I prefer the Merrythoughts.
