Present for a nearly 9 year old tomboy? Help!

Actually, two presents, as her 9th birthday is in January.

I'm really stuck. Her 6 year old sister is so easy - a real 'girly' girl. Like I was waaaay back then. Give her some dolls dressing up clothes or some pretend high heels and she's happy.

However DNiece1 has always been much tougher to buy for. This year I'm completely stumped. She doesnt like construction stuff though or I'd get her some lego.

Hmm

Do you know if she has read the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer? She might like those.

Check out the shops of galleries/museums like southbankcentre and natural history museum which have really lovely contemporary gifts including:

  • sound machine - fun remote control that makes loads of sounds like explosions etc; fingerprint art set (SBC)
  • dinosaur projection torch (NHM)
  • robots, science sets, VoiceBox or voice transformer (record and mix your voice), walkie talkies (Science Museum)

Has she read Swallows and Amazons? Music or musical instrument?

SantaJaxx · 13/12/2012 15:22

Does she like superheroes? Dd1 is a complete tomboy and loves all things superhero. The Avengers, Spiderman, Batman, Ben 10? Lego Ninjago (figurines not building) guns, cowboy stuff?

I have bought my eight year old tomboy a bow and arrow Grin

omaoma · 13/12/2012 15:52

FYI i always wanted a remote control truck, a huge train set and a scalextric when i was her age... wasn't a tomboy (into ballet), just liked transportation!

I have bought the charming 'gross magic' set for my 9 year old tom boy god daughter.
She loves magic, science kits. Last year was rock polishing and binoculars.
She also loves animals and animal stories and horrible history books.
More fun than dolls Xmas Grin

Skulduggery pleasant books - heroine of the books is a girl but extremely ungirly books - my boys love them.

Scooter?
Football & goalie gloves
some Bear Grylls items
Tent

DD is a massive tomboy, she is getting a skateboard, rollerblades, a cd player, a den kit, small globe. She has just got into The Hobbit as well, so maybe that.

JoInScotland · 16/12/2012 23:53

I saw some science kits that I would have loved at that age.... one was a volcano you could build and then it would erupt. It was labelled 8+ years.

Take a look at educational/science toys - they were always my favourite!

Playmobil was great for my tomboy. Beano subscription, fossil set, 3D puzzles, marbles, blackboard and liquid chalk pens
