am just over a stomach bug and spent two hours shoving my way thro Sainsbos on my own- these two factors combined have made me obSESSed with Christmas Food

I made gf mincemeat cupcakes on Friday - very tasty, and I have plans for baileys buttercream next time.

It must be time for my annual raid on M&S

As a side question, my MIL is coeliac and I was wanting to get her nice chocolates for x-mas. Is there anywhere good to try apart from the usual M&S and Thorntons?

Woohoo! My kind of thread!! Dp makes amazing gluten-free mince pies for me using doves farm flour - will ask her for the recipe and post back.

I have g-f trifle on Xmas day - made with g-f sponge then the usual ingredients. Love it and never really liked Christmas pud anyway.

Tesco do some really good g-f chipolata sausages that I might cut up and wrap with bacon.

M&S do gf cocktail sausages and sausages in bacon, so thats always my fave thing. Trifle is a big christmas thing in my family, so I always make one - sponge freezes fine, so you can make ahead of time.

I like Genius mincepies, and if Sainsbos have the iced gf mincepies again, they were great last year.

Mincemeat cupcakes - 3 egg sponge mix, plus 100g of mincemeat. I also subbed 50g of the Doves Farm SR flour with ground almonds for extra christmassy ness. The Baileys buttercream is make buttercream, then beat in as much Baileys as poss, just as you'd use milk normally

I use brazilian cheesebread mix for pigs in blankets and general snackyness, and you can do fab things with make your own sushi. Last year I did duck and hoisin rolls, which were snaffled at high speed (bought a crispy duck half already cooked, so v easy), but have also done sweet chilli chicken and plan on beef and horseradish next time.

I am adding a few more things to my list. Trifle would be yum; those cupcakes look like a goer. And I didn't know about M&S gf sausages- I tend to swerve them as they seem to put a tiny Tinkerbelly sprinkle of flour in just about everything. gah

Fresh- I don't know about chocolate assortments- I find M&S list stuff as containing gluten when it might just be a bit of biscuit in one sweet- again, I avoid. I tend to get either tins of Heroes etc or really really posh Belgian ones I don't really I'm just hinting

I really like lentil lasagna. But have blown calorie budget on eating gf gingerbread stars with orange icing that were leftover.

Have decided to give gf rough puff pastry a try to make sausage rolls this year, and have found a really nice cinnamon roll recipe on Pintrest to try.

M&S do loads of gf stuff this time of year - their stuffing packs are gf, cocktail sausages, and lots of other bits. Well worth a trip, and I freeze for the rest of the year, esp as I really like the chestnut stuffing

I'm not celiac but I have just had to go gluten free for health reasons. Day 4 here so I had already made Christmas cake
Have nothing so far but will be lurking for tips!

last year I did this: Danish rice pudding and a whole lot nicer than it sounds

it's tradishnal, innit. You put a whole almond in and whoever gets it wins a marzipan kugelen-y (??) sort of thing- like the sixpence in the pud

then the person who wins it gets the huff because they don't like marzipan and the ones who lose get the huff because they didn't win

I'm sure it'll get easier-right now it feels very confusing! Dreading socialising and having to explain to everyone what I can and can't eat! Eek.

Any coeliacs out there suffering also from lactose intolerance can use double cream in a recipe if you get rid of the lactose with a lactase enzzyme. Put 10 drops of Coleif in 600 ml of cream, stir and leave in fridge 24 hours.

M&S do good 93% pork sausages with pea starch in rather than bread or rusk.

Doves Farm gluten free flour is great for shortcrust pastry in tarts. Actually it is better than using normal flour. Go easy on the Xanthan Gum though as it makes pastry too hard. Just put one extra egg white in for each 400g of pastry.

I find, with eating out, the chains are your friends. Loads have an allergy menu (look online) so you can check before you go

I bloody hate some people - exdp and his stupid ignorant family "don't believe in all this gluten free crap". Constantly undermine it despite school, dr and ed psych saying ds needs to be on it. In the end a social worker went to visit him and told him straight that he sticks to it or else.

Dc's are going to Panto with them soon and ds was told if he wants gf stuff he has to bring his own as they like celebrations so that's what they're taking.

It is scary at first - but it gets easier and easier with time. First of all, deal with socialising by finding out local places that have an allergy menu or good gf dishes, then if people want to go out, you can just suggest a place you know is OK, rather than feeling like you are making a fuss.

I've been gf 15 years now, and its never stopped me doing anything - I travel round the world for work and eat out a lot for instance

I'm not a coeliac but my DM is and she asked me if I would make her a christmas cake. She gave me her gluten free flour and I made the same basic recipe as I did for all the other standard ones I'd done for other people. I found though that adding a little more booze moisture in the mix was needed and it took slightly longer to cook than the others. However teh finished product was pretty impressive I have to say..currently still feeding it with a little whisky or rum every week :)
Also I did notice Pizza Hut are now doing gluten free pizza bases if anyone wasn't aware.

Yeah in dreading the bloody gwyneth effect Tricky also as I'm not celiac, fortunately friends are very supportive ad have seen me quite ill for so long that they won't write it off as a bit of a airy fairy woo thing! Plus I can say an actual dr told me too...but still!
I'm sure it'll get easier, did the deep kitchen clean at the weekend and am going to get familiar with zantham gum-I love baking!
Wondering how long it'll take to notice a difference so far my tummys been worse, I've had a terrible sore throat and my period is four days early!

Well, I am Greedy and my DH may well need to be gluten-free by Christmas! He seems to have IBS (at least, I hope that's all it is, he's still pressing for further tests to rule things out) and it may well be that less gluten will help. He's never been a fan of Christmas cake so I eat it all myself but he does love, and look forward to, a Yule Log. So any idea how I can do a GF yule log (v light swiss roll, I suppose)?

Yes do a Yule log with very light chocolate sponge. Its a real treat.

Also try this Italian version of Xmas pudding.

Line a glass bowl (1 litre) with 1 cm thin sliced gluten free chocolate sponge and soak with 25 ml of cognac or brandy. Press firmly so it sticks to sides of bowl.

Fill void in middle of bowl with a mixture of 500 ml whipped cream (treated with lactase if sensitive to lactose), 100g of toasted finely chopped hazlenuts and a can of black cherries (drained and soaked in 15 ml of kirch) and 150g of grated 70% chocolate.

Put a lid of chocolate sponge cut to a circle shape on top of bowl and place in fridge with a plate to weigh lid down.

After 2 hours invert bowl and tip pudding out onto plate. Scatter cocoa powder and icing sugar on top in an attractive pattern.

Serve by slicing down through cake to reveal the interior layers of choclate, cream and cherries.

Sorry I'm distracting from the Christmassyness but could people tell me if they eat things that don't contain gluten but say they were made in a factory where wheat is used? Bought some cooking choc earlier and now I'm not sure...
On a more festive note I'm going to attempt the bbc crumble topped mince pies tonight but am going to add some zantham gum.

I used a standard chocolate sponge recipe but with with GF Doves farm flour instead of normal flour.

I fold in extra whipped egg white and some extra baking powder to make it really light. I avoid Xanthan Gum if at all possible as it makes cakes heavy and sticky and pastry hard as a brick.
