Wooden building blocks - any recommendations?

DD1 is 4 and really into building things, I thought it would be a nice idea to get her and DD2 a shared gift of those classic wooden blocks. Anyone know where I can get a really nice set?

ELC do a big bag of basic wooden blocks

Haba do really lovely building blocks, with some beautiful add-on sets. I think it's also Haba who do a series of architectures blocks to add on bits in the style of various iconic citiy skylines. You might also be interested in Kapla blocks which are actually more like planks and which can be used to make amazing models. My two children (6 and 3) are sharing a big set of Aldi kapla block equivalent as their main present this year.

Second ELC. Ours have lasted years.

We have these Eichhorn ones, www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0002ML4CY/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1354128136&sr=8-1π=SL75 I like them as they are a bit smaller for little fingers/ more detailed building and have pretty patterns. And the box is a shape sorter!

Do you think this would be a faddish toy and would I be better off sticking to a wooden building blocks set (like this one)

For anyone else researching blocks I decided to buy two Plan Toy sets the large set of 50 unit natural building blocks and a smaller set called creative blocks which has some different shapes and coloured blocks.
I really loved the Haba blocks but they were very expensive for not many so not great for trying to start a collection.
Would like to get DD2 the Sevilla set for her birthday though - they are beautiful
