DS8 (nearly 9) has given up asking for anything big for presents (he's asked for night vision goggles this year) but I've decided that this is the year... but can't decide which to get him. Know very little about technology and he is our oldest child.
As I see it.

Pros: I pod touch - most of his class have one and you can get things like app blaster which he say looks awesome or app fishing.
Pros: Kindle Fire - Looks good. A tablet (we don't have one). Cheaper than nexus
Pros: Nexus- Good reviews.

Cons: I pod touch -Not sure if the app gadgets are any good and I have just got an iphone so they can play games on that (although I would prefer to get my phone back).
Cons: Kindle & Nexus - don't know anything about them.

Tbh I'm sure he will love and be grateful for any BUT... it's a big expense for me so want to get it right.
What would you do????

My DS has an iPod touch after always playing on my iPhone. He loves it still a year later. Drawbacks are purchasing apps requires card payments but you can load with a giftcard.

I've seen/used tge others.

Thanks Goandplay - where do you get giftcards? Also should add whatever i buy would be mostly used for gaming I imagine

Does he like reading?

I have the same question, but just bwn the ipod touch and the kindle fire. Think i will get the ipod touch, as it is smaller, so more portable. Think he'd be more likely to loose the kindle fire as he'd have to put it down rather than shove it in his pocket iyswim.

Mine unfortunately is not into reading, so was wondering if a kindle fire might inspire him to read more (so the jury is still out)

If ipod, can't decide if I would get the new version or the old. technology is moving too fast....

Our almost 9 year old DS has asked for an iPod touch too. We're going for the 4th generation rather than 5th as it's about £50 cheaper and my tech friendly friend reckons the 5th doesn't provide any extra technology required by a small boy. Hope that helps.

thanks kikidee. would save the hassle of the different charger plug bit thingey (whatever the official name is) Angry. Ds wants a portable speaker dock thingy, but i said no point/ no way, cos a dock will be obsolete when he comes to replace hi iPod. it's so bloody annoying. grrrr

The normal iTune vouchers will do it.

You can download the Kindle app to an iPod Touch. I use the app rather than my Kindle sometimes in bed because of the back light.

Think in my experience Apple products are quite intuitive to operate.

You can get iTune vouchers everywhere, Tesco, Boots etc.

The iPod Touch is excellent for games and you get lots that are free or 69p. I think as long as you start as you mean to carry on with paying for downloads and upgrades then you'll reduce the constant requests.
